Three UK to carry newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 2

One of the biggest announcements of all yesterdays IFA 2012 action -- check out our recap if you missed anything -- was the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The latest iteration of the Note line is sure to be in high demand, and we know there's a lot of folks out there that want to know where and when they can get one.

During the Unpacked Keynote presentation in Berlin, Samsung announced that the Note 2 will be available in October. But, nothing more precise than that at this time. One of the first carriers to announce they will be carrying the Note 2 in the UK is Three. There are no details from Three on price or when they expect to offer it themselves at this time however. But, considering that Three UK offers some of the best deals on the market with affordable all-you-can-eat data, it may make a compelling companion to the Note 2.

We're only just getting started at IFA 2012 in Berlin, so stick with AC for all the best as it happens.

Is this Nokia's new Windows Phone handset? Mr. Blurrycam thinks so

Just when you think that the era of decent smartphone cameras has killed the Blurrycam, you get a beauty like this. Here's an image purporting to be of a new Nokia Windows Phone 8 handset that, if real, we'll see on September 5th. Of course, it could just as easily be a block of golden marzipan with some detailing, but at least it gives us hope that the company's sticking with its trademark polycarbonate in various shades of primary colors.

Exoplanet pair orbits two stars

Outer orb sits in habitable zone of binary star system

BEIJING ? And then there were two. The Kepler spacecraft has spied the first pair of planets passing in front of the binary star system they orbit. Adding spice is that the outer planet ? a potential Neptune-like world ? inhabits the life-friendly zone around the two stars.

?It receives about 88 percent the amount of energy the Earth receives from the sun,? says William Welsh of San Diego State University, who is scheduled to report the finding August 29 at the International Astronomical Union meeting. ?And it?s a multiple planet system. It?s hard enough to imagine how you get one planet in the binary; now we have two.?

The system, called Kepler-47, could have even more planets: A tantalizing but unconfirmed hint of an additional world lurks in the blinking starlight produced when the planetary companions pass between the two stars and Earth. The additional blink has been seen clearly just once, so more observing time would be needed to confirm a third planet. Kepler-47 is about 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.

The results also appear online August 28 in Science.

So far, scientists know that the outer planet, Kepler-47c, is roughly 4.6 times wider than Earth and that it goes around the stars every 303 days. The inner planet is three times wider than Earth, and whips around the stars every 49 days. One of the stars is similar to the sun, and the other is much smaller and dimmer. The two stars orbit one another about every seven days.

Determining the boundaries of the habitable zone in binary systems usually isn?t simple because the moving stars create a shifting region in which liquid water could survive on an orbiting planet. But this pair of stars cooperated. ?It?s a sunlike star and a real wimpy star,? Welsh says. In the case of the smaller one, ?you just ignore it.?

Kepler-47c is probably too big and gassy to host life, but if it had an Earth-sized moon, that could serve as a potential exo-incubator. ?It?s pure speculation,? Welsh says. ?But being in the habitable zone, if it had a big moon around it, it?s in the right place to have the conditions you would need for life.?

There is no evidence of such a moon, but smaller ones, more like Saturn?s moon Titan, could be present. ?If this object had a moon the size of Titan, that could be very interesting,? Welsh says.

Quran burning report a window on growing Afghan-on-US violence

A record number of US military personnel have been killed by Afghan security forces this year. A report on Quran burnings at a US base in Afghanistan points to a lack of cultural sensitivity, which could be driving broader Afghan anger. ?

The findings released Monday of a Pentagon investigation into February?s burnings of Qurans by US soldiers in Afghanistan could hardly have been more timely. They come out at the end of the worst month for killings of US forces by their Afghan counterparts of the 11-year war.

The investigation offers a sobering picture of the kind of distrust and cultural misunderstanding between US and Afghan forces that, in the case of the Quran burnings, led to deadly riots in Afghanistan. More generally, it helps to explain the growing number of so-called ?green-on-blue? incidents, in which Afghan soldiers and police turn on their US and coalition counterparts.

Twelve US military personnel have been killed by Afghan soldiers or police this month, bringing the number of coalition forces killed in such incidents this year to more than 40?? the deadliest for such incidents of the war.

In the report, Army Brig. Gen. Bryan Watson says he is convinced that US soldiers who oversaw the incineration that included as many as 100 Qurans did not act with ?malicious intent? designed ?to defame the faith of Islam.? But the report?castigates US military officers and senior enlisted personnel in charge at the US prison at Bagram air base where the burning took place.

He also says that US soldiers disregarded an Afghan officer and an interpreter who tried to tell them that burning the Quran would be viewed by Afghans as a desecration of Islam?s holiest text. ?That US service members did not heed the warnings of their [Afghan] partners is, perhaps, my biggest concern,? General Watson writes.

The Army announced that six soldiers would receive administrative punishment for their roles in the incineration.

Also on Monday, the Pentagon announced disciplinary action against three Marines for their participation in a video that shows Marines from the 3rd?Battalion, 2nd?Marine Regiment urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban fighters. The video, which reportedly dates from last year, surfaced on the web in January and kindled anger in Afghanistan.

The Quran burning and urination incident are two extreme examples of the kinds of actions that Afghans cite to explain why more Afghan soldiers and police are turning their weapons on their US and coalition partners.

US officials say that some of the attacks are the work of Taliban fighters who enlist in the rapidly growing Afghan forces for the sole purpose of killing Americans once they are ?inside the wire.? The top US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, told reporters in a video press conference last week that as many as a quarter of the incidents are the work of Taliban or Taliban sympathizers infiltrating the Afghan forces.

General Allen also noted that Afghan soldiers are under particular stress in August this year because Ramadan is under way, when Muslims are not to eat or drink until after sundown. Other Afghanistan experts countered by noting that Ramadan occurred in each of the previous years of the war without the corresponding spike in green-on-blue attacks.

Allen has ordered all US military personnel in Afghanistan to carry a loaded weapon with them at all times.

He acknowledged ? and most outside experts concur ? that most of the ?insider attacks? appear to be the result of growing resentments and frictions that build up as more recruits from a very conservative society are in close contact with the often young military personnel of a different culture.

Some Afghans become heated to the point of lashing out over actions that US soldiers may consider inconsequential. Examples that Afghans give include profanity-laced banter and casual references to women and sex.

The US military is trying to address the deteriorating relations by stepping up predeployment cultural-sensitivity training and issuing guidelines for dos and don?ts in the field.

But with the Afghan war in its 11th?year, with most Americans focused on the US drawdown, and with many Afghans tired of the foreigners in their midst, it may be harder than ever to address the root causes of green-on-blue violence.

Trees could be extra colorful this fall

Northeastern trees may put on a better fall foliage show than usual this year.

That's because lower than average levels of rain in New York and in some areas of the Northeast may lead to an earlier retreat of chlorophyll, the green pigment that allows plants to harness the sun's energy, said Donald Leopold, a tree researcher at the State University of New York in Syracuse.

With chlorophyll gone, other pigments in leaves become visible. These include carotenes and xanthophyll pigments, which appear yellow to orange and are present during the growing season but are masked by the green.

Reddish leaf colors stem from anthocyanins, which are only produced in the fall and are a reaction to stressful conditions. They act like sunscreen for the leaf, blocking out harmful radiation and shading it from excess light. They also help protect the plants' cells from freezing as temperatures drop.

In Syracuse and elsewhere, temperatures have begun to dip into the mid-50s (in degrees Fahrenheit) some nights, a sign of cooler temperatures ahead, Leopold told OurAmazingPlanet. Colder temperatures and shortening days serve as signals to plants to begin reducing the amount of chlorophyll produced and to start preparations for winter, which involves moving sugar and nutrients from leaves to roots.

Sufficiently cool temperatures can also directly reduce the amount of chlorophyll produced. Without being continuously renewed, chlorophyll breaks down and eventually leaves will fade from green to yellow or red.?

Ideal conditions for development of fall colors include sunny, warm days and cool nights. ?

Also potentially affecting the fall colors is the little rainfall that has occurred in the area this year, Leopold said.

Some trees are already showing color due to stress, Leopold said.

When a tree doesn't get enough water or is otherwise harassed, it may quit producing chlorophyll earlier, allowing colors to show. This strategy allows it to prevent itself from losing water and to wait out the winter.

Fall colors are best when there is a moderate drought, but not so much of a drought that leaves wilt and curl up or fall off, he said.?

It's too early to tell for sure whether it will be an unusually colorful year, though, since colors don't peak until October and conditions in the interim will affect the outcome.

Much to my parents? chagrin I?m known for telling people I do not have good genetics. Intellectual genetics, sure. I?m the product of a super-smart women and a quite brainy male. I come from a family that values brains over brawn. Books over BOSUs. Music over muscles.

MizFit Before I coasted happily on my intellect and thought not much about physical appearance or exercise ? until college. More specifically, my senior year of college when I realized the freshwoman 40 I?d gained prevented me from fitting into any of my interview suits.

Sure, I?d noticed my jeans no longer fit, and my ?diet? consisted more of late night pizza than early morning oatmeal ? but I was having fun. I could wear my jeans unbuttoned, and opt for oatmeal for breakfast if cholesterol was ever a worry. Until then, I was content to eat, drink, and be pretty damn collegiate-merry.

And then senior year job interviews arrived. I owned suits but quickly realized none of them fit. I?d been able to live in a place of denial with my jeans and stretch pants, but that time was ending. It was time to do something about my extra pizza weight.

Finding My Way? To the Gym

I look back now and am still baffled the ?something? I chose lead me to our school?s small, Division-3 weight room. It was dark, dirty, and rarely used by non-athletes, yet for some reason I felt called to venture in and see what it was like.

I didn?t fall immediately in love. I stumbled into sorta-like. I had no clue what I was doing, but since I was a novice I still saw enough results to change my body shape. ?Thanks to my ability to mimic what I?d seen on television or skimmed in magazines I created a hodgepodge of a resistance training routine. I used only machines I recognized (hello leg extensions!), and relied on bodyweight exercises (many, many push-ups). I fit dumbbells in where I could (bicep curls galore). After about six weeks (thankfully never injured myself with my ignorance), I was making visible progress ? and could at the very least fit into my jackets and skirts again.

After graduation I found myself returning to my parents house along with my freshly minted English Literature degree. Unable to find a job, I joined a women-only fitness center to have something to do while I searched. It was the early 90s and, while some women were lifting weights (many of us inspired by Linda Hamilton?s ?guns? in Terminator 2), there were very few of us in the free weights area.

I still had thirty-ish pounds to lose, but my women-only choice was less about vanity or friend-finding, and more about wanting to lift weights with other women.

I had no idea at the time I made this decision that it would change the rest of my life.

Weight training in a female-only environment quickly moved my relationship with the iron from like to love. I felt completely comfortable to try new things without the fear of people laughing at the fact I was a novice or a newbie. I brought workout magazines to the gym and imitated their routines. I bought Arnold Schwarzenegger?s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, and lugged it everywhere I went.

Finding My Stride: A Balancing Act

MizFit Flexing I lifted every single day. I grew bigger and stronger and I felt amazing.

Until I didn?t.

After about six months, my love for the weights began to wane. I didn?t look forward to my workouts as I used to. My bulging biceps and svelte shoulders began to shrink. I started to grow skinny-soft. I lifted seven days a week and yet appeared as though I?d not ever hoisted a barbell before.

It took me a while (my personal blog isn?t a play on the word MISFIT for nothing!), but I finally deduced I?d been overtraining.

I educated myself. I learned to listen to my body and heed the fact it demanded rest in order to grow. I began to eat intuitively and feed my muscles what they asked for.?My plate took on a wide variety of colors. Fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins became what my body demanded. I consumed food as close to its original form as possible.

I slowed down and grew more still ? in all facets of my life ? and it was then I realized most clearly I?d found my voice amidst the dumbbells and cables.

I had shed the extra pounds I?d been hauling around for a while, but, to my surprise, that was the least of the changes. I walked taller. I spoke up in all situations with a confidence I never knew I possessed. I sought out new and uncomfortable situations I had previously avoided. I felt capable, empowered, heard, and strong.

And I?ve never looked back.

I?ve maintained my weight loss for 19 years and I firmly believe it?s because weights, for me, are about far more than fat burning and body sculpting.

They?re the core of who I am.
They?re the reason I speak up and out.
They?re the reason I?m completely comfortable in my own skin and with who I am.

I?m still amazed how 20 minutes a day (Note: I?m consistent ? not hardcore), year in and year out, has built the foundation for my life.

MizFit Jump

I even met my now-husband as a happy by-product of the muscles gained in the gym. He still tells me how he noticed the way I walked before anything else and decided he had to meet me. He told me then how he could see I was confident and self-assured by the way I carried myself. I credit all of that to the weight room.

Today, I?m still lifting weights consistently at age 43. I work full-time as a writer and have a six-year-old, so my weight training looks pretty different now than it did back then. My workouts are typically done at 4am when I can snag some ?me? time before ?everyone else? time begins. My weights now more take the form of resistance bands, bodyweight, or active play.

At 23, I never imagined I?d be able both to maintain my weight loss and be more fit two decades later.

Looking ahead, I plan to be the old woman in the free weights area at 83.

With Samsung win on Galaxy Tab, judge may reconsider U.S. ban

(Reuters) - Apple Inc's legal victory on Friday over Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd was crushing but for one key front in its global smartphone and tablet patent war: Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The jury in San Jose, California federal court awarded the iPhone and iPad maker $1.05 billion in damages and said Samsung had copied critical features in the U.S. company's products.

However, it declined to side with Apple on one patent, covering design elements on the iPad. That put the jury directly at odds with the judge in the case who, only two months earlier, had sided with Apple over allegations the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet ripped off Apple's design.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh issued a pretrial order barring Samsung from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the United States.

Samsung is expected to file within days to dissolve that injunction against its tablet, a person close to the case said on Sunday. Representatives for Apple and Samsung could not be reached immediately for comment.

Samsung's Galaxy touch screen tablets, powered by Google's Android operating system, are considered by some industry experts to be the main rival among larger tablets to the iPad, although they are currently a distant second to Apple's device.

Normally, when a preliminary injunction based on one patent becomes inconsistent with a subsequent verdict, the party subject to the injunction asks the court to lift it, said Mark McKenna, a professor at the University of Notre Dame's Law School.

Yet while the jury absolved Samsung on allegations the Galaxy Tab violated Apple's design patent, it did say the device infringed some of Apple's software patents. That could complicate Samsung's pitch, McKenna said.

"If Samsung or Google could design around those patents, use features that didn't infringe, then they could sell the devices without violating the injunction," McKenna said.

Additionally, Koh can overrule the jury's decision and issue a verdict saying the Galaxy Tab infringed Apple's design patent.

"Judge Koh appears to be of the mindset that the accused Samsung tablet easily meets the 'substantially the same' infringement standard -- so much so that the facts lead to one and only one conclusion -- infringement," said Christopher Carani, a partner at Chicago-based intellectual property law firm McAndrews, Held & Malloy.

"Thus, Apple has a greater chance than usual to succeed in convincing Judge Koh to play this extraordinary trump card."

If the sales ban is ultimately dissolved, Samsung could go after Apple for damages for the wrongful imposition of the injunction, legal experts said.

Samsung, which has various tablet line-ups with different sizes from 7 inches to 10.1 inches, introduced the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in June last year and recently unveiled an upgraded version, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 II.

The company said that Koh's injunction would not affect the updated Tab 10.1 II.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, 11-1846.

Isaac May Hit New Orleans on Katrina Anniversary: What Are the Odds?!

Isaac, a tropical storm that could become Hurricane Isaac by tomorrow (Aug. 28), is barreling across the Gulf of Mexico toward New Orleans, and could hit the city on the anniversary of one of the most devastating storms in living memory.

Hurricane Katrina roared ashore in New Orleans on the morning of Aug. 29, 2005. So what are the chances that Isaac could hit on the same day, seven years later? About 25 percent, said Chris Landsea, the science and operations officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The latest forecast has Isaac making landfall on Tuesday evening (Aug. 28) ? but that could change, Landsea told OurAmazingPlanet.

However, he said, if Isaac does hit on Hurricane Katrina's anniversary, it won't come as a huge surprise. During the peak of hurricane season, a short window of time from mid-August to late October, the Gulf Coast is often hit with a flurry of storms, "so it's not that unusual to have the same place be hit on about the same day," he said.

In addition to timing, geography also plays a role, Landsea said. Regions that protrude into hurricane-prone waters tend to get hit more than those that don't. Just picture Florida, Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina, the four states that top the U.S. list for hurricane strikes?? all of them stick out into the ocean more than their neighbors.

Numbers game

On average, hurricanes hit the area around New Orleans about every seven years, according to National Hurricane Center statistics.

Yet it's important to remember there's nothing magic about those numbers, said Robert Henson, a meteorologist who works as a science writer for the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder, Colo. "It's simply a description of the average," he said. "There's no reason why a town couldn't get hit twice even in the same year ? or it could be decades."

Both Landsea and Henson emphasized that, aside from similar timing, Isaac and Hurricane Katrina differ in a several significant ways: Isaac's path has it approaching from the southeast, whereas Katrina approached from the south. That may seem like a subtle difference, but it can play a role in how much storm surge a system sends rushing on land, Henson said.

Another difference is that Isaac is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane ? a storm with winds that top out at 95 mph (153 kph) ? whereas Katrina was a powerful Category 5 hurricane at landfall.

Storm comparison

However, even though Isaac is significantly weaker than Katrina, it's a large storm, and is causing significant storm surges. "It's a very large system, so it's pushing a lot of water for its strength," Henson said.

Isaac was named on Aug. 21; satellites have been keeping watch over the storm from above, and hurricane-hunting aircraft have been monitoring it for days now. Late last week, crews sent back some arresting photographs?from inside the roiling storm.

Landsea said it's still not possible to know precisely how powerful Isaac will become. Despite all the technological advances in tracking storms, "we're still not very good at making intensity forecasts," he said. "It's still going to be significant, but not to the degree that Katrina was," he added.

Henson agreed, adding that even a storm far smaller than Katrina can still cause a lot of trouble. "Just because it's a Cat 1 doesn't mean it can't be a very destructive storm," he said.

-????????? In a shockingly fast decision, the San Jose jury found that Samsung had willfully infringed 6 of Apple?s patents in 14 of its older products and awarded more than $1B in damages.

The Apple v. Samsung jury took just 3 days of deliberation to deliver an unequivocal and potentially expensive rebuke to Samsung that will have Apple fanboys gloating for months.? However, taken in longer perspective, the verdict is really a first step in a multi-year slog toward either legal resolution or negotiated settlement.? Sometime this fall, Judge Lucy Koh will hear Apple argue for injunctions against the 14 infringing products and asking that the Judge triple the $1B+ damages awarded, as is her prerogative given the jury?s findings that the infringement was willful.? Samsung will ask that the verdict be thrown out on procedural issues.? Thereafter, assuming the almost certain case that Judge Koh affirms the jury?s decision, Samsung will ask a stay of any injunctions granted and the payment of damages pending the resolution of its appeal.

Meanwhile, Samsung and Google have undoubtedly been burning the midnight oil behind the scenes on? engineering work-arounds to the infringed upon patents for ?bounce-back scrolling?, ?double tap zooming?, and ?pinch to zoom?.? The first two are trifles, but ?pinch to zoom? is a bear, as it has become a well-established habit amongst both Android and iOS users and even an exceptionally clever and intuitive alternative will require future users to unlearn this basic gesture.? That said, a good alternative is far from impossible ? ?twist to zoom?, ?two-finger drag to zoom?, and ?hold and tilt to zoom? have all been suggested on the ?The Verge? forums.? At worst, work arounds will slow down product introductions for a month or two and create a very minor annoyance for users accustomed to the now verboten ?pinch to zoom? gesture.? The design patents ? governing the shape, materials and lay-out of the products ? are even easier to work around.? An injunction against the Samsung Tab 10.1 tablet in Germany prompted a minor change in the metal bezel in a revised and non-infringing model that hit the shelves just two months after the ruling.? In the US case, it helps Samsung that the verdict focused on older products nearing the end of their useful lives and did not address its newer and more important models, such as the Galaxy S III and Note lines, giving the company more slack in getting the work arounds to market.

Back in the legal realm, Samsung?s appeal will likely hit appellate court sometime in the next 12 to 24 months, typically to be heard by a three judge panel.? The recently concluded jury trial was extremely complicated, even by patent trial standards, and there were innumerable points of contention around rules of law that will constitute the arguments of the appeal.? History suggests that Samsung stands a decent chance of some vindication ? about half of jury verdicts on patent cases are at least partially overturned by appellate courts ? and that the process will take a long time.? For example, in February 2007, a jury found Microsoft liable for infringing Lucent?s patents on MP3 and awarded damages of $1.5B.? In August, the Judge vacated the judgment and limited Lucent?s claims, and a year later the appeals court upheld the decision.? A subsequent new jury trial on revised claims resulted in a $513M damages award to Lucent, but this too was overturned on appeal, and a third trial in 2011 resulted in $70M in damages, which was subsequently reduced to $26M on appeal.? Earlier this year, the now 5 year old legal odyssey was brought to a merciful close with an undisclosed private settlement between the two companies.

The Samsung appeal plays into a larger debate over the patent system in general, with many legal scholars questioning the appropriateness of awarding patents for broad product concepts.? In a similar dispute between Apple and Motorola, influential appeals court Justice Richard Posner purposely requested assignment to a lower court to hear the case and subsequently dismissed it with prejudice.? At the heart of his dismissal, which is under appeal, is a finding that Apple did not establish that there were any damages to its business at all.? Essentially, Posner believes that, amongst the 300,000 or so patents touching the modern smartphone, it is difficult to show that any one of them is important enough to justify an injunction or a substantial damage award.? Arguments along these lines, unimportant in a jury trial will be important at the Appellate level and front and center should the Apple v. Samsung case make to the Supreme Court, which many observers believe is possible.? The larger debate will also play at the political level, with calls for patent reform growing louder as the IPR litigation trend snowballs.

In this context, this stunning court room rout falls far short of Steve Jobs? vow of thermonuclear war against Android.? Android licensees will implement the necessary work-arounds, bearing some delays and costs which are unlikely to have much effect on the demand for products based on the standard.? Newer versions of Android have avoided many of the specific patents used by Apple in its IPR holy war, rendering most newer devices less vulnerable to the sort of whupping that was administered to Samsung.? The damages will not be paid until the appeals process is exhausted, but looming behind the scenes they will give Apple considerable added leverage should it intend to negotiate licensing terms in good faith.? To that end, the 3-5% royalty that most OEMs have reputedly agreed to pay Microsoft for its even more extensive patent library becomes a model for realistic agreements. ?The other threat to Android may be in the court of public opinion, where being branded as stolen copycat technology could sway consumers against the platform, although I suspect that any such effect would be fairly short lived.

Overall, my conclusion is that the verdict will have far less effect on Apple and Android, or for that matter, Microsoft, than most of the published trial post-mortems are suggesting.? Apple gets bragging rights and negotiating leverage, while the debate around software patents becomes more concrete and the appeals process proceeds.? Google will adapt, updating Android to avoid Apple?s patented flourishes and better establishing its own distinctiveness.? Samsung will continue to thrive, but will bear the short term costs of adapting its older models and will take a wider berth around Apple?s design cues in its new products, all under the long term risk that the appeals process could affirm Apple?s claims .? Microsoft benefits from its distinctiveness and proactive IPR cross-licensing program, but will still need to win over consumers increasingly tied to iOS and Android with compelling products based on its platforms.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? There are precious few Neandertal skeletons available to science. One of the more complete was discovered in 1957 in France, roughly 900 yards away from the famous Lascaux Cave. That skeleton was dubbed "Regourdou." Then, about two decades ago, researchers examined Regourdou's arm bones and theorized that he had been right-handed.

"This skeleton had a mandible and parts of the skeleton below the neck," said David Frayer, professor of anthropology at the University of Kansas. "Twenty-plus years ago, some people studied the skeleton and argued that it was a right-handed individual based on the muscularity of the right arm versus the left arm."

Handedness, a uniquely human trait, signals brain lateralization, where each of the brain's two hemispheres is specialized. The left brain controls the right side of the body and in a human plays a primary role for language. So, if Neandertals were primarily right-handed, like modern humans, that fact could suggest a capacity for language.

Now, a new investigation by Frayer and an international team led by Virginie Volpato of the Senckenberg Institute in Frankfurt, Germany, has confirmed Regourdou's right-handedness by looking more closely at the robustness of the arms and shoulders, and comparing it with scratches on his teeth. Their findings are published August 23 in the journal PLoS ONE.

"We've been studying scratch marks on Neandertal teeth, but in all cases they were isolated teeth, or teeth in mandibles not directly associated with skeletal material," said Frayer. "This is the first time we can check the pattern that's seen in the teeth with the pattern that's seen in the arms. We did more sophisticated analysis of the arms -- the collarbone, the humerus, the radius and the ulna -- because we have them on both sides. And we looked at cortical thickness and other biomechanical measurements. All of them confirmed that everything was more robust on the right side then the left."

Frayer said Neandertals used their mouths like a "third hand" and that produced more wear and tear on the front teeth than their back ones. "It's long been known the Neandertals had been heavily processing things with their incisors and canines," he said.

Frayer's research on Regourdou's teeth confirmed the individual's right-handedness.

"We looked at the cut marks on the lower incisors and canines," said the KU researcher. "The marks that are on the lip side of the incisor teeth are oblique, or angled in such away that it indicates they were gripping with the left hand and cutting with the right, and every now and then they'd hit the teeth and leave these scratch marks that were there for the life of the individual."

Frayer said that the research on Regourdou shows that 89 percent of European Neandertal fossils (16 of 18) showed clear preference for their right hands. This is very similar to the prevalence of right-handers in modern human populations -- about 90 percent of people alive today favor their right hands.

Frayer and his co-authors conclude that such ratios suggest a Neandertal capacity for language.

"The long-known connection between brain asymmetry, handedness and language in living populations serves as a proxy for estimating brain lateralization in the fossil record and the likelihood of language capacity in fossils," they write.
