Oscillating gel acts like artificial skin, giving robots potential ability to 'feel'

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Sooner than later, robots may have the ability to "feel." In a paper published online March 26 in Advanced Functional Materials, a team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated that a nonoscillating gel can be resuscitated in a fashion similar to a medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

These findings pave the way for the development of a wide range of new applications that sense mechanical stimuli and respond chemically -- a natural phenomenon few materials have been able to mimic.

A team of researchers at Pitt made predictions regarding the behavior of Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) gel, a material that was first fabricated in the late 1990s and shown to pulsate in the absence of any external stimuli. In fact, under certain conditions, the gel sitting in a petri dish resembles a beating heart.

Along with her colleagues, Anna Balazs, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, predicted that BZ gel not previously oscillating could be re-excited by mechanical pressure. The prediction was actualized by MIT researchers, who proved that chemical oscillations can be triggered by mechanically compressing the BZ gel beyond a critical stress.

"Think of it like human skin, which can provide signals to the brain that something on the body is deformed or hurt," says Balazs. "This gel has numerous far-reaching applications, such as artificial skin that could be sensory -- a holy grail in robotics."

Balazs says the gel could serve as a small-scale pressure sensor for different vehicles or instruments to see whether they'd been bumped, providing diagnostics for the impact on surfaces. This sort of development -- and materials like BZ gel -- are things Balazs has been interested in since childhood.

"My mother would often tease me when I was young, saying I was like a mimosa plant -- shy and bashful," says Balazs. "As a result, I became fascinated with the plant and its unique hide-and-seek qualities -- the plant leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, reopening just minutes later. I knew there had to be a scientific application regarding touch, which led me to studies like this in mechanical and chemical energy."

Also on Balazs's research team were Olga Kuksenok, research associate professor, and Victor Yashin, visiting research assistant professor, both in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering. At MIT, the work was performed by Krystyn Van Vliet, Paul M. Cook Career Development Associate Professor of Material Sciences and Engineering, and graduate student Irene Chen.

Funding for this research was provided by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army.

The Muesli Lover: Claudia Roden's chocolate breakfast

?
Muesli Lover?enjoyed a history, interiors and cookery lesson this week as?a guest of the venerable food writer Claudia Roden in her extraordinary arts and crafts home in London. The interior was straight out of the pages of her new book, The Food of Spain, a Spanish-Moorish feast of tiles, heavy cushions and dark, long-loved wooden furniture.

Claudia invited a group of journalists and bloggers to try some of the dishes from her book and the one that grabbed me was the hot chocolate. Our saccharine, watery versions just don't compare to the stand-your-spoon-in-it Spanish chocolate, thickened with cornflour, delicately sweetened and served with churros.

Chocolate was drunk long before it was eaten and its origins are in Mexico. Once solid chocolate began being used for cake baking,?Basques and Catalans found their source from Jewish chocolatiers in southern France, so Claudia explained, as she held court in her sunny back garden.

The drinking of chocolate, although limited to the wealthy, was encouraged by the Pope as nutritional sustenance during Lent, ironic then that many now celebrate abstinence during Lent with a chocolate fest at Easter.

The four-ingredient thick hot chocolate drink recipe features in 512-page tome, The Food of Spain, as much a coffee table book as a cookbook, and featuring some alternative?breakfast dishes if chocolate sounds a little too bourgeois. The tortilla, creamy salt cod omelette and scrambled egg with asparagus and prawn stand out but there are more, depending on how adventurous your morning tastebuds are.

Redford puts star power behind Colorado River film

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Actor and director Robert Redford, a longtime environmental activist, has teamed with his son to film a documentary about the Colorado River system, which conservationists believe is endangered by decades of development and global warming.

Redford, 76, who lives in Utah, traveled to Washington, D.C. along with Jamie Redford, a Northern California resident, to discuss the urgency of the message in their film, "Watershed," featured recently at the D.C. Environmental Film Festival.

Both father and son have been tireless vocal advocates for conservation, particularly in the western United States. Their documentary, produced by Jamie Redford and narrated by his father, draws attention to the enormous and, they say, unsustainable demands on the Colorado River system that provides much of the American west with water.

"The watershed issue is something that's happening all over the world, where the need for water is greater than the amount of water to provide for it," Robert Redford told Reuters.

"I think we're picking the Colorado River as an example of what's going on with watersheds all over the world and trying to focus on that and draw attention to it."

The river flows from the Rocky Mountains 1,450 miles to the Gulf of California. But, as the Redfords' film points out, the?water rarely makes it that far because of the multiple demands of agriculture, industry and communities upstream.

The film opens with an explanation of the history of the Colorado River system's development, starting with the Colorado River Compact of 1922, which provided for the equitable?division and apportionment of the water among seven states in the U.S. and two in Mexico.

But "Watershed" holds that the compact, 90 years later, has transformed one of the world's wildest rivers to the point where it will soon be unable to provide sufficient water for the populations dependent upon it.

"With population in the region expected to reach 50 million by 2050, temperatures rising and precipitation patterns becoming more erratic, demand will outpace supply unless we embrace a new water ethic" Redford says in the film.

A star of hits including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "All the President's Men", "The Sting" and the Oscar-winning director of "Ordinary People," Redford hopes?"Watershed" serves as a warning.

"There's a new water reality that people have to be aware of, and I think looking at the Colorado River as an example is what this film's about.

"I think it's using art as a tool for social awareness, you know, making a film about an issue and then getting it out to as many people as possible increases awareness. Maybe increased awareness will help solve our problem," he said.

The film illustrates the various demands on the Colorado River through the eyes of the people who live on it, from a fly-fishing instructor near the river's source to farmers and families living downstream. Jamie Redford said that by enlisting real people in the project, the issue was more likely to resonate with audiences.

"It was pretty clear from our point of view that what we wanted to do was specifically focus on people, and we wanted to take a positive look at what is a challenging situation," he said.

"So, in that regard, we found characters up and down the river from the headwaters all the way out to the Colorado delta in Mexico that are fighting to make a difference and are making a difference and setting an example of what you can do."

As a California native and long-time resident of Utah, Jamie's father said he has watched the gradual depletion of the Colorado for 50 years and that the issue is too important to ignore any longer.

"You've got 30 million people dependent on that water source, and a lot of that dependency is urban renewal, booming metropolitan cities. You've got drinking, you've got sanitation and you've got electrical generation. You pull that off the river," said Redford. "Plus, the agricultural water rights that the farmers and ranchers have. You've got a depletion that has to be looked at."

An early supporter of President Obama, Redford said he is disappointed by the administration and Congress's progress on?future fuel sources, noting that non-sustainable, carbon-based fuels are a major contributing factor to global warming and the problems facing those who depend on the Colorado River. But no one in government, Redford said, is courageous enough to make decisions that could prevent worsening of the situation.

"The future is about young people," he said. "Young people coming on today, like Jamie my son, his son, other generations coming, what are we thinking about them?

"I think we have such a tendency to think short, short term, and therefore apply short term solutions to longer term problems. We're just not going to get there unless that changes."

There's a Holiday for Everything! National ... - Food and Drink Digital

?

GLENDALE, Calif., March 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- There's "Clean-Up Your Room Day" (May 10), "Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day" (April 18) and even "National Goof-Off Day" (March 22), but "National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day" (March 24)? Absolutely!? While Nestle did not establish this hallowed holiday, the company is leading a national celebration in the name of Nestle Raisinets!

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120319/LA72067-a)

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120319/LA72067-b)

Raisinets History

Raisinets chocolate covered raisins were first introduced by a family-owned business in 1927, the Blumenthal Brothers Chocolate Company of Philadelphia. The brand was sold over the years and in 1984, Nestle acquired then owner Ward?Johnston, makers of Raisinets, Goobers, Chunky, Sno-Caps, Bit-O-Honey and Oh Henry! ?Raisinets are sun-ripened, plump, juicy California raisins drenched in pure, creamy Nestle Milk Chocolate and dark chocolate. They are a natural source of fruit antioxidants, and contain 30% less fat than the leading chocolate brands.?

Entertainment History

Raisinets are best known as the perfect movie treat, right up there with popcorn. In fact, movie goers have been known to mix the two for the best of that sweet and salty taste! Early in movie making history when a box of Raisinets was sold to theaters for 1.25 cents, fans could buy a box of Raisinets for a nickel. Today, retailers sell Raisinets in single bags, stand-up bags and theater concession boxes, but they were originally sold by weight from jars in candy stores!

Trivia

Raisinets are actually polished to make each one shine!? In earlier years, Raisinets were made by hand in small mixing and polishing pans. A load of 350 pounds took approximately 90 minutes to coat and an additional 60 minutes to polish. Today, Raisinets are made by machine in nearly 2,500 pound batches! That equals almost one million Raisinets in a single batch or more than 21 million each day!

Raisinets are made with a special type of grape and proudly made in the USA! Only one kind is chosen to become a Raisinet, Thompson Seedless grapes!? All are grown and harvested in California's Central Valley.

If you lined-up the amount of Raisinets produced in one year end-to-end, the length would go around the earth 2.5 times!

Every man, woman and child in the United States would receive 17 Raisinets if the amount made in a year was shared with all. That's a handful of delicious goodness!

Raisinets are gluten-free!? Absolutely!?

Raisinets are made in Burlington, WI.? If we packed a year's supply of Raisinets in theater concession boxes and lined them up end-to-end, they'd reach from Burlington, WI to Hollywood, CA two times over!? They'd be the star of the show!?

Remember?? National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day is Saturday, March 24, 2012.? Plan to celebrate with a theater concession box or a stand-up bag of Nestle Raisinets and a blockbuster movie!?

Nestle Raisinets are available in single serve pouches for on-the-go snacking, and in theater concession boxes and stand-up bags ideal for sharing. This perfectly balanced treat is available at retailers nationwide in milk chocolate and dark chocolate.

Things You Need to Handle When Beginning Your Internet Marketing

Home ? Internet marketing

Written By: Fredrick Niemeier?on?March 14, 2012 One Comment

Everybody dreams of owning and running his or her own business. At some point in time, everyone has done this, even if they don?t want to admit it.

Before you start your online business, make sure that you are comfortable with the internet. Obviously you use the Internet or you wouldn?t be reading this article. But this does not mean that you would know the first thing about what makes a online business successful. If your only tie to social media is with Myspace, then you need to get with the times.

Do not create a business that is illegal. The internet does not allow businesses that are illegal. This says that you must register your company because of local, state and federal laws. In addition, you cannot ignore your taxes. It might seem like a little thing, but it you can save yourself a lot of time on the backend. Even if you are working freelance you usually have to register yourself with, at the very least, your state. Work with your a small business counselor and make sure that you are abiding by all laws.

Then take a look at a few blogs and determine how you should start and run your new business. Find out how everyone else on the web is communicating and socializing in this day and time. This will be very helpful to you in the very near future. Does your business have to be incorporated? This is something that you will have to think strongly about. The sides are split pretty evenly on this. Many people think that working as an affiliate means that you should form a corporation. Others think that you should not do this until your business gets larger. There are pros and cons for both sides. Talk to a lawyer (you can usually do this fairly cheaply though your local small business development center or legal aid office) to figure out which path is going to be best for you.

A lot of people think that it will be a cinch to start an internet business. Just create a webpage and customers will throw tons of money at it. No, this is only in fairytales. During its 2012 edition, the WWDC WWJC, also known as JailbreakCon, will be rolling out the red carpet in San Francisco on September 29th. Those interested in trekking toward the Golden Gate Bridge can book their way into the keynotes and workshops by unleashing anywhere from 65 to 155 bucks per ticket -- the cheapest of the bunch being an "Early Bird" deal through June 29th. US 'offered Israel new arms to delay Iran attack'

The United States offered Israel advanced weaponry in return for it committing not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities this year, Israeli daily Maariv reported on Thursday.

Citing unnamed Western diplomats and intelligence sources, the report said that during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week, the US administration offered to supply Israel with advanced bunker-busting bombs and long-range refuelling planes.

In return, Israel would agree to put off a possible attack on Iran till 2013, after the US elections in November.

Israel and much of the international community fear Iran's nuclear programme masks a weapons drive, a charge Tehran denies, and it was top of the agenda at talks between Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama in Washington this week.

The United States and Israel are at odds over just how immediate the Iranian threat is. Netanyahu said on Monday that sanctions against Iran have not worked, and "none of us can afford to wait much longer."

A key difference between Washington and Israel has emerged on the timeline available for a military strike against Iran, with the Jewish state warning that the weaponry available to it gives it a shorter window for action.

In response, the report said, the US administration offered to give Israel weapons and material that could extend its window to act against Iran.

In particular, it would offer bunker-busting bombs more powerful than those currently possessed by Israel, which would allow the Jewish state to target Iranian facilities even under solid rock.

Earlier this week, the Ynet website reported said that Israel Military Industries (IMI), one of the country's leading weapons manufacturers, had upgraded its MPR-500 guided missiles, turning them into "bunker busters" capable of penetrating double-reinforced concrete walls and floors 200mm thick.

But figures from a poll published on Thursday showed that almost six out of 10 Israelis -- or 58 percent -- were against the idea of a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities without US backing.

The same poll, published by Haaretz newspaper, also found that over half of the respondents trusted Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak to handle the Iran issue.

The Maariv report comes shortly after world powers known as the P5+1 -- five UN Security Council members plus Germany -- offered to resume long-stalled talks with Tehran over its contested nuclear programme.

Israel has cautiously welcomed the talks, but warned it must be prepared for the potential failure of any new dialogue with Iran.

Workers' Comp Surcharge Cost Burden to N.Y. ... - Insurance news

The assessment surcharge added to workers? compensation costs for New York employers is increasingly becoming a burden for businesses, according to a new study.

In New York State, the assessment surcharge is currently 20.2 percent ? which is more than double that of the second most expensive state in the nation (8.9 percent in Minnesota).

It is also nearly five times greater than the 4.2 percent average assessment levied by states. Currently, 32 states impose such assessments.

These assessments are essentially a tax on workers? compensation premiums and are used by state governments to fund the system, according to the study from The Workers? Compensation Policy Institute.

Over the last two years, New York State increased this tax by 10.4 percent and 27.5 percent respectively. While states are free to choose various methods for funding their individual workers? comp systems, the most common method is to impose an assessment or tax on premiums paid by employers, the study noted.

In New York?s surcharge, 10.1 percent on premium is assessed to fund the ?Special Disability Fund.? This accounts for half of New York?s assessment charges, the study stated.

The second largest assessment, 5.7 percent of premium, is used to fund the ?Reopened Case Fund? ? this fund assists with claims that have been closed but later reopen. The third largest assessment, 3.2 percent of premium, is the cost that employers pay for the state to administer the Workers? Compensation Board. The study said New York?s administrative costs are quite high and, in fact, exceed the total cost of assessments in all the comparable states except Connecticut.

The study is available online at The Workers? Compensation Policy Institute?s website.
