SEATTLE -- His name is listed with distinguished visitors such as President Carter, Mother Teresa and the Emperor of Japan. He has near-hero status in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. But Floyd Schmoe, an unassuming UW forestry professor, never thought of himself that way. He thought he was just building houses. In November, Hiroshima will honor him with a museum that he helped build himself more than 60 years ago.

Schmoe's grandson, Tom Schmoe, says his grandfather, a Quaker and conscientious objector during World War I, got to Japan in 1949 determined to build houses. Problem was, he had no idea how to build the Japanese way, with post and beam.? He hired a Japanese carpenter to teach him how? and forged ahead.? With his buddy the Reverend Emery Andrews of Seattle Japanese Baptist Church and others, Schmoe was able to construct 26 houses between 1949-52.

"For him, (what drove him) was a profound sense of guilt and shame at what the U.S. had done," said Tom Schmoe. "He felt that he had to make reparations."

The city of Hiroshima has invited Schmoe's relatives and Rev. Andrews' son Brooks, also a minister at Japanese Baptist, to help dedicate one of the last remaining houses which has become a museum. It was moved to make way for new development to the Eba neighborhood and will be the first satellite museum of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Tom Schmoe says his grandfather would probably be surprised by all the fuss. "He didn't go there for the ceremonies. He went there to build houses.? He mentions being bewildered by it all."

Rev. Brooks Andrews agrees. "It wasn't to build monuments to themselves.? It was all about peace and goodwill."

The Seattle delegation will tell their hosts in Hiroshima how Floyd Schmoe so loved the people of that city that at age 90, he used proceeds from a Peace Prize he won to help build a peace park in Seattle with a statue of Sadako, a young atomic bomb victim.? Schmoe died in 2001 at the age of 105.

To support the new Floyd Schmoe Museum, Japanese Baptist Church will host a concert by Mike Stern, performing music inspired by Hiroshima, Sunday September 30 at 3 p.m. 160 Broadway, Seattle.

Why I Believe The iPhone Is The Best Smartphone For Any Business Owner

By: Sandi Krakowski

It is my firm conviction that you must have either a Smartphone or a Pad Device to be efficient, on task & 'in the flow' with today's Smartphone Mobile Marketing culture. Here's why-?

This article is not written for the casual user of Facebook or someone who uses email only to pass on chain letters and correspond with their few close friends. It is written for business owners, beginners and veterans, who want to be not only relevant in today's fast-moving Mobile culture, but they wish to be RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of where most internet users are today.

It has been predicted that Mobile connected tablets will generate as as much traffic in 2016 as the ENTIRE global mobile network did in 2012. Currently, more than 60% of people watching video online are using their smartphone and tablet to do so. And if that wasn't enough, 76% are shopping on the same units!

As a business owner, plain and simple, if you aren't using a smartphone you are doing your customers a serious disservice. How can I say such a radical statement? Consider the ramifications- if more than 49.6 million people are viewing just one of the largest Mobile retailers online, Amazon, every single month, how many people are you missing out on because you have NO IDEA what they are seeing, using or are driven by without using the same device yourself.

Working with hundreds of thousands of clients who trust us for their online business training, I'm always surprised when people tell me they want to build an online business however?. "I don't like smartphones. Haven't been convinced yet I need one." ?Maybe surprised isn't the word- SHOCKED is more like it!

Stark reality- it's not about you! It's about the more than 4 out of 5 smartphone owners who are shopping and need what you have!

Back to my article?.. WHY I believe the iPhone is the best smartphone for any business owner. (Note- there is no affiliate link, direct connection or paid advertising on this website in? connection with Apple or iPhones. I don't make any money saying this!)

I have personally used a Smartphone since the Treo was the best tool around. This baby could connect me to email, the internet, my tasks, my calendar and more right in the palm of my hand. CHANGED my life! Did any of you have a Treo? ?:)

491px Treo650 Sprint 245x300 Why I Believe The iPhone Is The Best Smartphone For Any Business Owner

The Smartphone surge grew with incredible force and before we knew it, there were so many models to choose from most consumers were buying after comparing price. When they first launched, the most cost effective, inexpensive data plan won! Today, EASE OF USE is the key and many don't even care what it cost them! (CLUE! Take notes!) ?

The iPhone however not only changed how we use our Smartphones, it completely changed how we do LIFE! ?With the advance of social media and the need for any business owner worth their salt to be connected to social media, the iPhone made it easier than ANY other Smartphone on the market to flawlessly jump between app to app, email to internet, docs to video and back again in just seconds.

If you are serious about running a business online, it's going to be important for you to be connected often.?I never advocate you waste your life away being online on your favorite phone all day long, but I DO teach and recommend that you make your life EASIER by being able to connect to the tools you need, effortlessly.

Why I Believe The iPhone Is The Best Smartphone For Any Business Owner

Let's review the components you must have, at a bare minimum, to run a profitable business-

  1. A Blog
  2. A Facebook Business Page
  3. Twitter Profile
  4. Email List To Market To

This is a bare-bones list. ?Then we want to add components of connection such as-

  1. Video
  2. Audio
  3. Pictures
  4. Articles
  5. Advertising
  6. Social Media Tools- Hootsuite. Social Oomph, TweetDeck
  7. AND MORE? but I'll stop here

All of these tools and components can be run and used on a daily basis with an iPhone. They are VERY easy to use and the learning curve is super small!

There are other models on the market and please don't argue with me and send me hate mail because you love another model and want to put me in my place. ?When running a business online, it's important that ALL of the devices you use can sync and operate flawlessly together without you having to do all the syncing all day long! The iPhone does that! (And the iPhone 5 is the best around! HA!)

If you add an iPad and a MacBook to the arsenal ? you are on top of the world! There really isn't any other office equipment you would need! Want to print something? Great, buy a printer, but if you want to stay green, you can do that too with all the amazing non-printing, file transferring, digital fax sending and signing tools that exist!

We live in a time period when it has NEVER been easier to build a business AND succeed in that business online. The most amazing thing about this generation of online business owners is this- you can bring your business with you everywhere you go, in less than 6 inches of space!

The iPhone 5 I believe should be on some of your Christmas lists this year! ?Tell Santa you REALLY want to succeed and you don't want another handbag or another tool belt or another set of drill bits- the iPhone could be the single best tool you ever use to make your new Mobile Marketed online business easy to run, it will make it FUN to learn with as well!

We teach classes that can ALL be replayed and reused on a Smartphone. All of our videos, streaming calls, workbooks, books and more can be taken with you everywhere you go.

In the 80's PC's were the mass adoption?. people were switching to PC's at a rate that was unbelievable to the tech world! ?Soon enough EVERYONE had a PC in their house! Today, many have more than 5 in their home! More than 1 per family member!

Smartphone adoption is happening faster than PC's did in the 80's. ?

It's TIME for you to get connected and serve right where all of your best clients are. And it is my personal belief (which means don't send me hatemail, post nasty comments or begin to argue with me, it's an opinion, a suggestion, one I bring forth running a big multi-million dollar company with 15 years of expertise behind me but you don't necessarily have to agree?.. ) my personal belief is that the iPhone is your best choice!

WIth love,

Sandi Krakowski

Libyan president Magarief ready to die for democracy

Libya's new president, Mohammed Magarief, tells NBC's Ann Curry that the recent trouble in Libya is the unfortunate price of creating a democracy after decades of dictator-rule. Magarief lived in exile for 20 years in Atlanta before returning to Libya and becoming president.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

He was wanted by Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, he survived seven assassination attempts and he lived in exile in Atlanta for two decades, but now that he is the new president of Libya, Mohamed Magarief says he is ready to sacrifice his life for his homeland.

"I'm determined. I'm determined to even sacrifice my life for that ... to see Libya as free, democratic," Magarief, an economist and former Libyan ambassador to India, told NBC's Ann Curry in an exclusive interview.

Libyan president to NBC: Anti-Islam film had 'nothing to do with' US Consulate attack

"I have always been ready to sacrifice my life for-- for my dream of Libya," he said.

Magarief's dream of a democratic Libya began to take shape in 1980 with the founding of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, a group that pushed for democratic reforms in Libya and opposed Gadhafi's rule.

Magarief, who participated in the group alongside former Libyan diplomats, ambassadors and army generals, said that was his first jump into the fire.

"I started in 1980, when I decide to defect from the regime and call for, openly, for its downfall and toppling and participated with my colleagues for so many years in a very comprehensive program of action to achieve this, to topple Gadhafi and to build a new democratic Libya," he said.

Because of his open opposition of the regime, Magarief was forced into exile, first to Morocco, where Gadhafi went after his family and friends, even killing and disappearing some of those linked to him. When Morocco decided to extradite him to Libya, Magarief sought refuge in Egypt.

In an interview with NBC's Ann Curry, Libya's president Mohammed Magarief said there's 'no doubt' the attack that killed four Americans in Libya was preplanned, and not a result of the controversial anti-Islam movie that sparked violent protests.

He lived in Egypt for seven years, but had to seek refuge yet again when former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak wanted to send him back to Libya, where he was still wanted. In 1991, Magarief and his family moved to Atlanta, where he lived until Gadhafi was toppled in October, 2011.

"I didn't leave home to stay for good in Atlanta. I left my home to return, to hope to return to it after it's liberated from Gadhafi. Having? being liberated now, it's my duty to, it's my dream and my hopes to return to my home, Libya, and to die there, to be buried in Libya," he said.

A transitional leader
Libya's national assembly picked
Magarief as its president in August. He is the leader of the National Front party, an offshoot of the old opposition movement he helped start. Magarief, who is from Benghazi, won 113 votes against independent Ali Zidan, who got 85 votes.

The path Magarief envisions for Libya includes free and open elections and a new constitution. He said he has no desire to stay in power beyond the transitional period, and hopes his successor will be a democratically elected leader. Magarief disagrees with the idea that fundamentalists will be allowed to fill the power vacuum in Libya following the toppling of Gadhafi, adding that Libyans will stand against extremist views.

"These fundamentalists, these extremists, these trends that are, first of all, it has nothing to do with true Islam, real Islam," he said. "The interpretation that these people introduced is not accepted by majority of Muslims."

Magarief discounted claims that the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi earlier this month was in response to an anti-Islam movie produced in California and available on YouTube. He noted that the assault happened on Sept. 11 and that the video had been available for months before that.

"Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, .... six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September," he said. "They chose this date, 11th of September to carry a certain message."

"We consider the United States as a friend, not only a friend, a strong friend, who stood with us in our moment of need," he added.

Magarief admitted it would not be easy for Libya to shake off the legacy that decades of Gadhafi's dictatorship has left behind, but he strongly believes that every country deserves to enjoy democracy.

"This should not continue. If it continues, we'll all pay a heavy price. The solution is freedom, is democracy," he said. "Giving people the chance to -- and I'm sure we'll mature. We'll mature quickly, very quickly. And we'll prove that we are responsible human beings, who deserve freedom and democracy."

Maggot guts help police identify body

Police in Mexico recently discovered a body burned beyond recognition in a remote patch of woods just off a country road. The hands and feet were missing. There was no physical evidence nearby except a school graduation ring. The body was in such bad shape that investigators couldn't even determine the gender. The only soft tissue available for genetic analysis was a burned fragment of liver, but attempts to get a DNA profile from this bit of evidence proved futile.

However, forensic investigators were able to find useful genetic material in an unusual place ? inside the guts of the maggots infesting the corpse's neck and face.

"This is the first reported case of analysis of human DNA isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of maggots used to identify a victim in a criminal case," a group of researchers from Monterrey, Mexico, wrote in a report this month in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

An ancient papyrus fragment which a Harvard scholar says contains the first recorded mention that Jesus may have had a wife is a fake, the Vatican said Friday.

    4. Maggot guts help police identify body

Ten days before the body was found, a man claimed his daughter had been abducted. He recognized the ring, but couldn't tell if the badly burned corpse was his daughter. The investigators took a DNA sample from the man and then looked at the gut contents of three blowfly maggots from the dead body. They found traces of human DNA in the bugs' stomachs. With this evidence, they found that the victim was female, and they were able to run a paternity test, which came back with a 99.68-percent match to the man, confirming that this was his abducted daughter.

Maggots are commonly used to construct timelines for crimes, as larval development can indicate how long a victim has been dead. Attracted by gases escaping from a decomposing corpse, blowflies often show up within minutes of death, infesting parts of the body and laying their eggs there. It's the larvae that result from these eggs that serve as a timestamp; depending on the temperature they develop from egg to winged adult in a matter of 10 or so days.

But the researchers say this grim case shows how else the insects might be used as clues.

"If maggots are encountered in association with human remains, investigators could utilize this approach if the extraction of DNA from other sources is not possible," wrote the researchers, led by Marta Ortega-Mart?nez, of Universidad Aut?noma de Nuevo Le?n.

Risk Measurement Models | Enterprise Risk Management | FRM Exam

by Maria on September 27, 2012 in Course Preparation, Financial Management, FRM? Part 1

Risk is one of the major concerns for every firm. The increasing amount of risks in today?s market has increased the demand for risk measurement models and risk management tools by the day. Let?s have a look at some of the popular risk measurement models used in Enterprise Risk Management in this post.

There are two major models of risk measurement that are applied widely across firms within the space of Enterprise Risk Management; namely stated below.

  • Structural Models
  • Probabilistic Models

Structural Models: Structural Models are also referred as Deterministic Models as within these, clear cause and effect is defined. The outcomes are expected and probability of non-expected outcomes is not considered. For example, the rise in the interest rate will determine the revenue growth.

Probabilistic Models: Probabilistic Models also referred as Stochastic Models use observations to parametrize the data. These parameters are used in analytic models such as measurement of variance, correlations, etc. At times, one can also directly use the observations in a simulation such as the Monte Carlo simulation. These simulation techniques require several iterations and high computational power.

Besides these basic models, there are also various tools that are used in the risk management at a firm level. These tools are namely:

  • Capital management
  • Performance measurement
  • Investment strategy
  • Crisis management
  • Contingency planning
  • Business expansion strategy
  • Distribution channel strategy
  • Strategic planning

These are the major models and tools used in Enterprise Risk Management. To know more about risk measures and risk management, you can explore our training courses on Financial Risk Manager exam preparation. Simplilearn offers both online and classroom training courses on FRM Part 1 Exam prep.

Tattooed U.S. Politicians

A Czech Republic political candidate made headlines this week, not for his policy but for his face full of tattoos. There may not be anyone that extreme in Washington, but American politicians have been hiding their own ink under blazers and congressional pins for years. Congressional Representatives, members of the White House cabinet and even presidents have indulged in the painful practice of body art.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. uses his arms as a form of expression, with tattoos to symbolize his family; his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi; and even Bruce Lee.

Rep. Dan Boren also has a fraternity tattoo. He joined Kappa Sigma.

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

Rep. Mary Bono Mack made a pit stop at a tattoo parlor shortly after 9/11. There she got a tattoo of a cross as a proclamation of her faith.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, a former Marine Corps officer, has tattoos on his arms to commemorate his three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The late Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., the Republican Party's nominee for President in 1964, had four small stars and a half moon on the underside of his wrist. According to Roll Call the tattoo was intended to symbolize his "participation in the Smoki People, a group of largely white, Native American culture enthusiasts in the Southwest."

President Theodore Roosevelt had his family crest tattooed on his chest.

Just because politicians are typically buttoned up does not mean that they can't have a little fun with their artistic creations. Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz has a tiger, the mascot of his alma mater, Princeton, tattooed on the left side of his derriere. According to a Chicago Tribune piece published in 1987 , confirmation of Shultz's racy rear end came from his wife, Helena. She confirmed the rumors to reporters on the secretary's plane during a trip to China.

Other politicians, whether or not they got their own tattoos, have inspired others. The faces of John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln and Sarah Palin have all graced the bodies of supporters (or their opposition).

Even pop super star Miley Cyrus recently inked up her arm with a Theodore Roosevelt quote that reads, "So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."

Contractor chosen for Washington Monument repair

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The National Park Service named a Massachusetts contractor Wednesday to repair the Washington Monument's earthquake damage, though it may take two more months before work begins at the National Mall site.

Perini Management Services Inc. of Framingham, Mass., beat out two other bidders to win a $9.6 million contract that includes extensive repairs to the monument's stonework. It will involve building massive scaffolding around the 555-foot-tall monument, sealing cracks inside and out, repointing the mortar, cleaning the exterior and strengthening weak spots with metal brackets.

The total cost of repairs, including work already completed, is $15 million.

Federal officials said the contractor's parent company, Los Angeles-based Tutor Perini Corp., was the prime contractor for the construction of the Ronald Reagan Building, Washington's largest federal building. The contractor's team also includes firms involved in a restoration of the monument completed in 2000.

"We are again one step closer to getting this important landmark reopened to our visitors," said Robert Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

The marble and granite obelisk has been closed to the public since a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the region on Aug. 23, 2011. The upper portion of the monument sustained large cracks when it shook violently during the quake. It will likely remain closed to visitors until 2014.

At a gift store nearby, visitors still ask why the monument is closed and when it will reopen, a worker said.

Maryann Albert, a nurse from Philadelphia, was riding her bicycle with her husband near the monument Wednesday but didn't know it was still closed.

"I keep thinking, one of these days I should come down and go up in it," she said.

It would help to have a sign explaining the monument to George Washington is closed, she said. Instead, yellow tape at the base reads "Police Line: Do Not Cross."

The monument normally has about 700,000 visitors a year who ride an elevator or climb stairs to the top.

Park service project manager Michael Morelli said gaining access to the tall monument is the most difficult portion of the project. The repair work is relatively easy.

The park service may add extra metal brackets to some stone panels that are similar to those that cracked to provide extra support in case of a future earthquake.

Within about 60 days, work will begin at the site to start building scaffolding. That alone will take four to five months, said Brian Labbe, who will serve as construction manager for Perini Management.

Scaffolding also will likely be built inside the monument's top pyramidion, where some of the worst damage was found.

Once work begins, the project will take 12 to 18 months to complete, officials said.

Congress allocated $7.5 million to pay for part of the repairs. In January, Washington businessman David Rubenstein pledged another $7.5 million.

The monument was completed in 1884 and was the world's tallest structure until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was built. Vogel said it remains the tallest freestanding stone structure in the world.

"The monument," he said, "is one of a kind."

Opinion - The Chronicle of Philanthropy

The city of Denver is trying to solve a problem others could only dream of: how to allocate a surplus of $57-million for cultural projects that was raised in the 2007 Better Denver bond approval but never spent, writes the Denver Post.

Although there are few limits on how the money can be spent, one requirement is that it must go toward existing, city-owned facilities.

Eleven Denver cultural groups, including the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra,? the Museum of Nature and Science, and the National Western Complex, are among the institutions vying for a portion of the money.

To be eligible to receive the money, a nonprofit must be committed to raising funds that would match the city?s allocation. Proposals from nonprofits will be evaluated by a group of leaders representing local foundations, public works, corporations, and city government.

Five years ago voters approved a bond measure to support the Colorado Symphony Orchestra?s plans to make repairs to its concert hall. The symphony was unable to raise the required matching funds for the project, however, so the city is now free to use the money for other cultural endeavors.

And to that, I say: Hogwash. You don?t need to go on a mission and find your passion to start a business. You just have to throw away much of your guilt and self-doubt ? and own the fact that you were put on this planet to do this very thing that you?re doing right now.?

Oracle pay for CEO Ellison jumps to $96 million

Larry Ellison, the founder and CEO of Oracle Corp. and one of the wealthiest people in the world, saw his pay jump to $96.2 million last year.

The pay, disclosed in a corporate filing, was up 24 percent from the previous year's total of $77.6 million. Most of Ellison's pay came from stock options that were valued at $90.7 million when they were granted in June 2011.

Those options, to buy 7 million shares at $32.43 a share, have value only if the stock is trading above that price. The options have been under water for most of the time since they were granted. But on Friday, Oracle stock rose 21 cents to close at $32.47.

The company cut Ellison's performance-based bonus to $3.9 million, down from $13.3 million a year earlier. Other senior executives endured similar cuts. That was because Oracle's profit growth for the year came in below its goals, according to the yearly filing it made Friday.

Oracle's net income rose 17 percent to $9.98 billion for the year that ended May 31. Revenue rose 4 percent to $37.12 billion.

The company said compensation was $51.7 million for both Safra A. Catz, its president and chief financial officer, and Mark Hurd, its president. Nearly all their pay was also in stock options that had little value as of Friday.

Oracle said its compensation committee recognizes that Ellison, 68, already "has a significant equity interest in Oracle, but believes he should still be eligible for an annual compensation package because of his active and vital role in our operations, strategy and growth."

Ellison's salary was only $1 for the year that ended May 31, 2012, unchanged from the previous year.

Forbes this week estimated Ellison's net worth at $41 billion. That ranked him as the sixth-richest person in the world and the third-richest in the United States, behind Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

The Associated Press' calculation isolates the value the company's board placed on the executive's total compensation package in the last fiscal year. It includes salary, bonus, performance-related bonuses, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted.

The calculation doesn't include changes in the present value of pension benefits. And they sometimes differ from the totals that companies list in the summary compensation table of proxy statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The statements to the SEC reflect accounting charges taken for the executive's compensation in the previous fiscal year.

Rio employees accused of stealing London documents

(AP) ? In an embarrassing episode for the host of the next Summer Olympics, several employees of Rio de Janeiro's 2016 committee were caught stealing files from British organizers during the London Games.

London's organizing committee said Friday that Rio employees, working alongside London staff in the technology department, had downloaded internal documents without authorization. The Brazilians were working with London organizers during the July 27-Aug. 12 games as part of an official "transfer of knowledge program" between Olympic host cities.

"I can confirm there was an incident involving members of the Rio team who accessed and removed files without permission," London spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle told The Associated Press. "We reported it to Rio management. They acted quickly to resolve the issue and return the files."

The Rio employees involved in the theft were removed from the London program.

The nature and content of the London files was not immediately known. However, officials said the documents likely would have been provided to the Rio team had they requested them.

Top-level London officials were notified and informed Rio organizers, headed by Carlos Nuzman and Leo Gryner.

Nine Rio employees were fired for the incident, according to a report by Brazilian journalist Juca Kfouri at the UOL.com web portal. Kfouri is also a columnist at the Fohla de S. Paulo newspaper, Brazil's largest. His report said the London files included information about strategic planning and security.

Brock-Doyle said she couldn't confirm whether, or how many, Rio employees were fired. Messages and calls to the Rio organizing committee in Brazil were not immediately answered.

"It's an issue between Rio and London which they have dealt with," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told the AP.

Rio, the first city in South America chosen to host the Olympics, sent hundreds of staff to London during the games to monitor the operations.

Disclosure of the stolen files comes two months before London and Rio officials gather in Brazil for the official "debrief" of the 2012 Games, a meeting where previous organizers provide the next hosts with information for staging the event.

People change moral position without even realizing it

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Shortly after expressing a moral view about a difficult topic, people may easily endorse the opposite view and remain blind to the psychological mismatch, according to research published Sep. 19 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

In the study, led by Lars Hall of Lund University, Sweden, participants were presented with a survey about moral issues, including foundational principles and current hot topics with moral implications. To complete the survey they had to flip over the first page of questions, which was displayed on a clipboard, and this is where the researchers implemented a design usually used in performance magic: the back of the clipboard had a patch of glue that caught the top layer of the questions, so when the page was flipped back over, an opposite version of the original questions was revealed but the answers remained unchanged. In other words, the participants' responses were opposite to their originally declared positions (For a video illustration of the experiment, see http://www.lucs.lu.se/cbq/).

The researchers then discussed the participants' answers with them, and found that many participants supported their reported answers, even though the responses were opposite to what the individual had originally intended to express. The authors write that "participants often constructed coherent and unequivocal arguments supporting the opposite of their original position," suggesting "a dramatic potential for flexibility in our moral attitudes."

Commenting on their results, Lars Hall says, "It could have significant impact on research that uses self-reported questionnaires. Either we would have to conclude that many participants hold no real attitudes about the topics we investigate, or that standard survey scales fail to capture the complexity of the attitudes people actually hold".
