Some Democrats call for action on gun control after Connecticut shootings

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A day after the Connecticut elementary school massacre, a senior congressional Democrat on Saturday called on U.S. lawmakers to pass sweeping new gun control measures including banning assault weapons and high-capacity clips, saying, "Politics be damned."

Representative John Larson, chairman of the House of Representatives Democratic Caucus, gave a list of specific policies he wanted the U.S. Congress to vote on quickly after the mass shooting in his home state of Connecticut.

U.S. lawmakers have not approved a major new gun law since 1994, and they let a ban on certain semiautomatic rifles known as assault weapons expire in 2004.

Hours after Friday's rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, President Barack Obama called for the federal government to prevent mass shootings "regardless of politics," but did not offer details on policies he would seek. He reiterated his commitment to "meaningful action" during his weekly radio address on Saturday.

Twenty-eight people died in the incident - 20 schoolchildren and six adults shot at the school, one woman at another nearby site and the gunman.

The incident put renewed pressure on Obama and other Democrats to reverse their years of caution about gun control laws and address the easy availability of firearms. However, gun control supporters face a Republican-led House that could block such measures.

"There may not be a single cure-all for the violence in our nation, however we must start the process and begin the deeper and longer conversations that need to take place. Politics be damned," Larson said in a statement.

"Of the 12 deadliest shootings in our nation's history, half of them have happened in the last five years. And there is not a single person in America who doesn't fear it will happen again."

BACKGROUND CHECKS

Larson said Congress must quickly vote on measures that include requiring background checks for all gun sales, closing "loopholes" on the terrorist watch list and banning assault weapons and high-capacity clips.

Other Democrats, including Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, New York Representative Carolyn McCarthy and California Representative George Miller, are calling for stricter gun control after the shootings.

Blumenthal and Miller said they believe the nation should have a "conversation" about gun control, but Blumenthal declined to discuss his ideas at depth so soon after the shootings, saying he wanted to show respect to the families of the victims.

McCarthy, whose husband was killed by a gunman on a commuter train in 1993, said in a statement: "I agree, now is not the time to talk about gun laws - the time for that conversation was long before all those kids in Connecticut died."

McCarthy and other Democrats, who traditionally support gun control, voiced skepticism about the call Obama made for "meaningful action," mostly because of his lack of specificity.

"I'm not sure if the president meant it or if it was just more rhetoric," a senior Democratic congressional aide said on Saturday. "But if anything is ever going to happen on gun control, now is the time. He is in a perfect position to act."

The aide said Obama should take advantage of having just won a second term, which means he can act without worrying about voter repercussions in the polls or donors withdrawing dollars.

Faced with intense lobbying by the National Rifle Association and other gun groups, and fearful of a backlash from gun-owning voters, most Democrats have stopped trying to pass new laws.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the NRA did not donate money to Obama during this year's presidential election but sent funds to his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

In total, it donated $634,146 to Republicans during the 2012 election and $85,450 to Democrats.

Egypt evacuates 4,000 people from Syria

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Foreign Ministry says that Cairo has more evacuated more than 4,000 of its nationals and their family members from Syria over the past several months.

The Sunday statement did not provide a more specific time frame for the evacuations. It cited one recent instance of 90 people, including Egyptian nationals and their Syrian spouses and children, who were given special passage through the Syria-Lebanon border before being taken to Beirut airport.

Fighting has recently intensified around the Syrian capital. Egypt's national air carrier halted all flights to and from Syria late last month due to the deteriorating security situation around Damascus airport and the roads leading to it.

Google Maps for iOS: The best map app ... since Google Maps

As the brouhaha over Apple Maps failures reached fever pitch, rumors spiked about a new app in the works. Made by Google, it would run natively on the iPhone, bringing all of the previous features of the Google-powered Maps together with free navigation, the one thing it had been missing all these years. It seemed like a dream. Today, it is real.

It is what it sounds like, a return to?those friendly yellow streets and orange highways, set in a soothing tan backdrop checked with green and blue bits of nature. But the app's interface is enhanced, and it syncs with your Google account so it can remember past searches, even if they were on other devices. And now it tells you where to turn as you drive, just like Apple Maps, and just like those $40 competitors in the App Store. Only it's free.

I don't want to overdramatize it, but it's hard not to. When the iPhone 5 came out, I decided to put my primary phone service on a Samsung Galaxy S III instead. After a few months of mounting annoyances, with only a few "oh, that's cool" moments to make up for them, I decided to switch back to the iPhone. My only misgiving: That I would lose the?native?Google Maps app. Yet the very same?night that I switched my phone?service to an iPhone 5 ... Lo! The Google Maps app did appear in the App Store.

It's not exactly the same as the one you get when you buy an Android phone. There are no swooping 3-D views, there seem to be fewer stalkery uses of Street View photography,?and instead of a?multitude of layers, there's?just traffic, satellite view and public transit. But that's all that is needed ? that and Google's own powerful local search engine ? to be instantly superior to Apple's own troubled Maps.

The thing about Apple Maps isn't that it can't take you to an address you plug in ? generally, it can. The problem is, the database of "points of interest" is so lousy, both in quantity and quality, that you end up yelling at the phone, "Yes, there is a Chuck E. Cheese on Johnson Street, don't tell me there isn't!!!" In a world where we are rapidly forgetting phone numbers and street addresses, the outcome is the same: You don't get to where you're going, and it's the Maps app's fault.

The other big Apple Maps?problem, one that just seems like a profound oversight, is the lack of public transportation info. Google already earned the respect of straphangers with its comprehensive realtime public transit data, and you better believe that's all integrated into this new iOS?app as well.

Yet?Google is no dum-dum. Even though it has a monster head start over Apple in mapping, with 80 million POIs around the world and five million miles of road photographed by the Street View crew ? not to mention "tens of thousands of updates" made to the database every day ? it too has the occasional point-of-interest failure. It knows Apple's iPhone?users are frothing at the mouth right now, and one false geotag could get it bit, too. So it displays this unprecedentedly comprehensive warning before you get to navigating:

Well, that's no vote of self-confidence! Some of that language may be required by law, but a lot of it sounds like covering one's rear end.?Still, it's Google. Anything it does in mapping is inherently?going to be better.?

Look and feel
The Google Maps user experience is smooth and, for the most part, intuitive. Searching couldn't be easier, whether it's a particular restaurant or shop,?a general POI search ("gas station") or an actual address. All of it goes into the same smart?window, unlike some more cumbersome navigation apps out there.

Once you've decided on a destination, you navigate by tapping the little car icon. If you last took a trip by public transit, you will see a bus icon instead, but regardless, you can change your mode of transit on the next screen. Once you've picked your mode (and, in some cases, your route), you hit the Start button and you're off.

While driving, you see a much cleaner interface than Apple's. Over time, what ended up bothering me more than anything about Apple Maps was that even though it looked pretty, the screen was often crowded with words. Designers need to keep it spare, because I'm driving over here! I'm not going to read your novel. Google gets it right, with just the necessary information tucked neatly around an easy-to-read map.

Overall the look seems up to date, yet it sticks to the simplicity that everybody loved about Apple's old Google-powered Maps app. I am sure that?as I use it I will find out things I dislike ? and that I will also notice cool tricks I don't know about yet. But in this first look, I can already tell that we're in much better hands than we were with Apple Maps, and that's enough to breath a huge sigh of relief. (And for you people still on iOS 5 to upgrade to iOS 6, for Pete's sake!)

And oh yeah, it's even got a little Siri power. At least, you can enter searches with your voice rather than typing, and to fire up the app, you can tell Siri "launch Google Maps." She may not like it, but she complies.

Gift Guide: Books for Kids and Teens

It can be difficult to buy books as a gift, especially for children and teenagers. You want to get them something that will interest them, but you also want to make sure the book is age appropriate and ? especially for teens ? does not contain explicit language or destructive habits. What you really want is something they will enjoy and will be inspired by, without being condescending. You want a book that catches your eye right as you open it, rather than a book that causes the familiar ?eye roll.?

So what can you get for your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, or godchildren that will make them happy?? Hope has a few recommendations for this holiday season:

Ages 4 ? 6

It?s never too late to teach kids to think positive thoughts. Tiger-Tiger, Is It True? written by Byron Katie, and illustrated by Hans Wilhelm (Hay House), teaches children that they shouldn?t let things that happen to them control their thoughts about life or about themselves. In the book, a wise owl asks the tiger four questions, and when the tiger truly thinks about the answers, he realizes his life is not actually falling apart. This is a great way to teach children that just because you have a bad day at school or somebody says something mean, you don?t have to suffer ? you can turn it around into a positive thought. This book is ideal for children who can read, but I also recommend it for the parents and family of children who cannot yet understand all of the words. By reading it aloud to your children or relatives, you can instill the positive thinking. The earlier children learn to think positively, the better.

Ages 6 ? 9

Children in this age group may enjoy reading the Bible, but many of them would rather read little stories that make them feel good.? I suggest Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago (Zondervan/Zonderkids) to bridge the gap. Lloyd-Jones takes her expertise in crafting children?s Bibles to a new level, with 101 different tales that will inspire the kids. Each story includes a very short Bible passage, so kids can still make the connection between the story and Scripture in a fun way while still learning about God. The illustrations by Jago are vivid and beautiful; it?s almost as if they could jump off the page right into your child?s mind. The combination of words and pictures really brings the positive anecdotes to life. The best part: children will be drawn to this book over and over again.

Ages 10 ? 14

The middle school years are always tough, and kids this age really need to boost their confidence to deal with the process of growing up. Many of them may also be dealing with bullies in some form, and need a way to feel good about themselves while being able to say no to things the ?bad kids? may be trying to talk them into.? A Kid?s Guide to Being a Winner by C. D. Shelton (Choice PH) can help with all of that. With simple illustrations by Greg Gillespie, the book explains how to be a winner by choosing to be responsible, respectful, and thoughtful, going into detail about what all of those things mean and what to do to achieve them. It also delves into having an attitude of appreciation about the good things you have, while learning from the not-so-good things and developing a positive mindset that will help you overcome challenges. Not only will it answer questions that this age group has, but it will boost their self-esteem and become a reference tool whenever an issue might come up ? especially if they are not in the mood to talk to their parents about it.

Ages 15 and up

This is a really tough group to buy for, whether it be books, clothes, or anything else for that matter. The kinds of stories teens are drawn to don?t necessarily mesh with good morals, and they prefer fantasy over true-to-life books for the most part. The Guardian by Heather Burch (Zondervan) tells a story of humans and half-angels which provides plenty of fantasy, but, as Burch says, ?minus the cuss words, drinking, and smoking?. These characters have high moral standards along with adventures. Teens will appreciate that life can and will be exciting even as they stick to their values. Don?t worry, the book is still filled with mystery and romance.

The Guardian is the second book in the Halflings trilogy, but can be read on its own without needing to read the first.? If you would like to start your favorite teen out at the beginning of the series, both Halflings and The Guardian are available.

Books are a gift that keeps on giving all year long and beyond. And if you pick positive ones, the gift of knowledge will carry children well into adulthood. Take the time to really look at the books you are choosing for the kids in your life to make sure they?re getting the right message.
