>> a lot of research stems back to the 1960s when rapid weight loss had some adverse associations with it. so doctors tend to recommend slower weight loss . but new research really shows that there's tremendous individual variability. and actually some people that have rapid weight loss actually sustain it much longer than those who do not. in fact, i have to tell you in my clinical practice, it really helps people to get a jump-start. you know, they feel good. they get that positive feedback . and they can stay with the program a little bit longer.

>> it's a great motivator personally and when you hear feedback from other people. a lot of times you're told you should set realistic weight loss goals. even if you have to lose 50 pounds, maybe start out with 25 so it doesn't feel so overwhelming.

>> right. and i have to confess, i'm a person that has always promoted realistic goals amongst my patients. but we are a high achieving society. we're all individuals and many of us respond to raising that bar higher. we don't treat our kids all the same, our patients the same, athletes the same. people are motivated in different ways. don't be discouraged. you know, if you really want to set a high goal for yourself, go for it. you might actually be very successful.

>> all right. also, there's a lot of talk about gym class or physical education in schools which we've seen cut in a lot of school districts because of budget issues. there's a belief that these classes can actually lead to weight loss . i find that surprising.

>> well, i'm concerned about this myth. i think that we have to keep in mind and underscore the -- that gym class in their current form, they're not like in the old days when you got to play. many of our physical education classes now are filled with learning rules, writing about how you feel about this sport, you know, we need to ingrain habits in kids early. and even though our research doesn't show that the current form of physical education classes is associated with weight loss , it's not sensitive enough to see the changes in body composition. more importantly, erica, it builds confidence in kids to actually have lifelong habits of physical activity . so we have to keep in mind what our end goal here is.

>> that's what's important, to instill that goal in kids. just to get moving every day so they carry it through their adult life.

>> absolutely. as you know, it's a lifelong struggle for many people trying to lose weight .

>> in terms of getting moving. there's talk about whether sex is a good workout. a good calorie burner. what is the verdict?

>> right. it turns out that sex doesn't burn a lot of calories. and this is really in line with a lot of recent research dispelling old myths that we need a lot of high-intensity, short bursts of activity. what we're seeing now is in order to lose weight , we need long, duration, high intensity. the average person, a sexual bout is six minutes. if this is your form of physical activity for six minutes, you have to increase the time you spend.

Open online classes could change education

Dozens of elite institutions are now partnering with start-up companies such as Coursera, Udacity and edX, to deliver so-called massive open online courses or MOOCs. NBC's Rehema Ellis reports.

University of Virginia history professor Philip Zelikow has taught the course, "The Modern World: Global History Since 1760" for 16 years -- but this semester is different. Instead of delivering it to 120 students on campus, he'll be teaching 42,000 students around the world.

While online learning is not new, access to top-notch professors at some of the world's most prestigious universities is. Along with the University of Virginia, Harvard University, Stanford University, Brown University, Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University are among dozens of elite institutions partnering with start-up companies such as Coursera, Udacity and edX, to deliver so-called massive open online courses or MOOCs.

Now, Greek history at Wesleyan University, poetry at the University of Pennsylvania, astronomy at Duke University, and "Introduction to Music Production" at the Berkley College of Music are all just a click away. And they're absolutely free.

Since 2011, more than 2.5 million students from around the world have enrolled in MOOCs. Even though they are not offered for college credit and completion rates are low, some educators see the potential to revolutionize higher learning.

"Thanks to these free online courses, you can shop a range of disciplines and do it all from the comfort at your own home," Coursera co-founder Daphne Koller said.

Zelikow was apprehensive at first.?

"I'm not a techie guy who's interested in experimenting with all this computer stuff," he said. "In fact, I was kind of a skeptic about all this online stuff. I thought it was fad-ish."

But after spending hundreds of hours preparing for this semester's course, Zelikow now sees the potential in expanding online.

"Bruce Springsteen is involved in selling recorded music to people all over the world. And he also sells tickets to live concerts," Zelikow said. "Nobody thinks the recorded music is just as good as the live concert. But he wants to be in both those lines of business."

He says there's not only value in reaching thousands of students worldwide, but believes the move online has actually improved his course for those taking it on campus.

"I thought of ways to use this [online course] to actually re-invent the ways I teach my ordinary class at the university and make it a better class than it used to be, to solve certain problems that are kind of structural problems in the way we teach our residential courses," Zelikow said.

Dawn Smith, 38, has taken "Fundamentals of Pharmacology" through the University of Pennsylvania and a public health class through Johns Hopkins after deciding to change careers.??

"I needed some textbook knowledge," Smith said. "I felt in order to be taken seriously as a candidate I needed to show I was doing something proactive."

Critics of MOOCs complain about their size, saying it leads to minimal student-professor interaction.

"I've met students from Germany that I've spoken to quite frequently - Australia, Japan, China, and then some in Africa," Smith said.

Although she would "absolutely recommend" this online platform, Smith acknowledges the limitations, too.

"There isn't that immediacy of being able to ask a question and then have an answer," Smith said. "There's no one standing in front of you showing you how to do something."

Other concerns include measuring student progress and the sustainability of these courses over a long period of time.

Siva Vaidyanathan, University of Virginia media studies professor, says he thinks MOOCs are an "interesting experiment," but that they're just that - an experiment.

He doesn't believe they can replace a traditional college education.

"Imagine taking a university and removing all the really fun stuff," Vaidyanathan said. "And all you're left with is me talking to you through a camera. That's not that good for anybody."

As professors, students and investors navigate this new terrain, there are questions about the potential for profit in the future and the place MOOCs may have in higher education.

For some, however, these online classes bring about hope.

"Education is such an equalizer. It raises people's abilities ? lets people build a better life," Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng said.

Even Vaidyanathan sees the silver lining.

"I hope somewhere in some corner of the world ? some child discovers calculus, discovers physics, or discovers poetry through a MOOC and gets ? inspired to change the world," he said.??

'The Wonder Years' Anniversary: Celebrating 25 Years With The Show's Top Guest Stars

"The Wonder Years" turns 25 today (January 31) and to celebrate the milestone anniversary, we're looking back at some very famous faces who got their start on the classic series.

Long before he was romancing Carrie Bradshaw on "Sex and the City," John Corbett was with Karen Arnold (Olivia d'Abo) on "The Wonder Years" and three years before she swept the nation with the phrase "as if!" in "Clueless," Alicia Silverstone was playing Kevin Arnold's (Fred Savage) dream girl.

• David Schwimmer

  Long before he was romancing Jennifer Aniston on "Friends," Schwimmer was Michael on "The Wonder Years." He was on four episodes as boyfriend (and eventual husband) to Karen Arnold (Olivia d'Abo), Schwimmer clashed with the Arnold family patriarch (Dan Lauria).

• Alicia Silverstone

  In her first credited role, Alicia Silverstone played Jessica, Kevin Arnold's (Fred Savage) dream girl. Silverstone appeared in one episode, "Road Test," in 1992. Three years later she was starring in "Clueless."

• Mark-Paul Gosselaar

  In 1988, before he shot to stardom with "Saved by the Bell," Mark-Paul Gosselaar played Brad Gaines in the "Dance With Me" episode of "The Wonder Years." In the episode, Kevin asks a girl to go to the dance with him, she agrees, but then Gosselaar's character asks her and she goes with him instead. After his "Wonder Years" appearance, Gosselaar went on to get his big break on "Saved by the Bell" and currently stars in "Franklin and Bash" on TNT.

• Dustin Diamond

  Gosselaar isn't the only Bayside alum to get his start on "The Wonder Years." In 1989 and 1990, while "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" was transitioning to "Saved By the Bell," Dustin Diamond appeared in two episodes of "The Wonder Years." In 1989, Diamond played Joey Harris in "Loosiers," and in 1990 he played Joey Lapman in "The Glee Club." Of course, viewers know him better as Samuel "Screech" Powers on many incarnations of "Saved By the Bell."

• Carla Gugino

  As Sandy in the 1991 episode "Triangle," Carla Gugino came between the Arnold brothers. Originally Wayne's (Jason Harvey) girlfriend, Gugino's character and Kevin begin a tryst on the side, hence the name of the episode. Since her "Wonder Years" appearance, Gugino has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including "Sin City," "Political Animals" and "New Girl."

• Seth Green

  Before he was helping slay vampires as werewolf Oz on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and creating late night comedy with action figures on "Adult Swim," Seth Green guest starred in numerous TV shows, including "The Wonder Years." Green appeared in two 1992 episodes as Jimmy Donnelly and yet, he looks exactly the same.

• Juliette Lewis

  Early in her acting career, Juliette Lewis appeared in several early episodes of "The Wonder Years" as Wayne's girlfriend, Delores between 1989 and 1990. In 1989, Lewis appeared in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." Since then, Lewis was nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for "Cape Fear" and appeared in several films and TV shows, including "The Firm," "The Other Sister" and "The Evening Star."

• Giovanni Ribisi

  Between 1992 and 1993, Giovanni Ribsi appeared in 15 episodes of "The Wonder Years" as Jeff Billings, a good friend of Kevin's. Ribsi's character lived with his divorced mom in the series. Since then, Ribsi has appeared in several films and TV shows, including "Friends," "My Name is Earl" and "Ted." He also co-starred in "The Other Sister" with Lewis, though they missed each other on "The Wonder Years" by a couple seasons.

• John Corbett

  "The Wonder Years" was John Corbett's second credited role -- it was under the name Jack Corbett -- in 1988. In the episode titled "Angel," Corbett played Louis, Karen's new boyfriend, who was cheating on her. Since "The Wonder Years," Corbett has played key roles in "Sex and the City," "United States of Tara" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."

• A.J. Langer

  In 1993, A.J. Langer appeared as Mary Jo Genaro in "The Wonder Years" episode "Eclipse." In the episode, Kevin and his classmates take a trip to a planetarium to watch a solar eclipse and bad girl Mary Jo takes a dare to hit on the nerdy kid in class. Since then, Langer co-starred in "My So-Called Life," "It's Like, You Know ..." and several episodes of ABC's "Private Practice."

Camelbak designs ski lift-specific hydration pack

Hydration backpacks have made carrying water during many sports much easier. For some other sports, however, the hydration pack isn't that much more convenient than a water bottle. When it comes to skiing, hydration packs freeze easily and can be uncomfortable on a chairlift. Camelbak has a new design that promises to make hydration more ski-friendly.

The new Bootlegger hydration pack is designed to be worn underneath a ski jacket, rather than over it like any other backpack. The idea is for it to be closer to your body, where your core temperature will prevent the 50 fluid ounces (1.5 L) of water from freezing. The breathable mesh harness is designed to prevent it from becoming too hot and sweaty.

CamelBak claims that the design is streamlined specifically for lift-served skiing and snowboarding, so it should be more comfortable to wear on the chairlift.

The company also sells the PowderBak vest, which is a 70-ounce (2 L) hydration system integrated into a softshell vest. Introduced in 2009 as the ShredBak, the vest has a similar aim of keeping water close to the body for anti-freezing warmth and lower-profile carrying.

I used to use a small CamelBak pack regularly for resort snowboarding. While it was easier to carry than a water bottle, the combination of discomfort on the lift, occasional freezing and irritation of cleaning out the bladder led me to go back to carrying a water bottle in my jacket pocket. Assuming this new design is effective at adding comfort and anti-freezing, it may be worth looking into. I'm hoping to get a sample to test out on the slopes and report back.

The Bootlegger will launch in September for US$55.

There?s a real growth ? a boom even ? in online point of sale systems and accounting systems so you?ve got the likes of Xero, Vend, Unleashed, and there?s others. These online applications ? Cloud software ? replace things like MYOB, QuickBooks, and the retail manager program that comes with MYOB, and those legacy sort of applications.

That shift from the old applications to the new ones is dramatic and it?s good to see actually. It always discourages me when I find we get a client who has lost all their point of sale information, or the company that they?re with wants to charge them $4,000 to change computers and install the software again, or get a new version.

The idea that you can write some boutique piece of software that only works on the offline machine, costs thousands of dollars, and you can extort business owners for it, those days are pretty much in the distance.

There?s probably a few industries where you still can escape it, but for your average sort of retailer, or small business, or service business, screw those guys. Do it with Xero or Vend or one of the other systems. Get your own CRM online. Do your online banking and payments. Take payments with credit cards on your iPhone. These are kind of things that are really changing the efficiencies and revolutionizing small businesses.

We had a client just recently, he?s got a fairly niche retail store. He?s going okay online, he?s got people visiting in his store, and he?s stuck on MYOB RetailManager. It?s costing him a fortune because his customers have to wait while he does the invoices then he?s got to send his file off to the book-keeper and oh, the hassle. I mean, if he?s got Xero on Vend, he can do everything on his mobile phone. He can sit on his iPad and do invoices.

He doesn?t have to wait for the accountant to send back the file. He can just get started and, any time he likes, he can be using his point of sale system while the accountant?s logged in. It just amazes me that people are still stuck using old legacy software like MYOB and QuickBooks.

There?s a steamroller going through those programs and it?s online systems so if you haven?t changed yet to Cloud-based solution for point of sale, definitely, it?s going to happen soon and it?s going to save you a stack of time so yes, definitely I would recommend checking out, if you?re a retailer, Vend. If you are more like you need stock-control type things then Unleashed tends to be the preference. If you just need invoicing and accounting MYOB-style then Xero is definitely the way to do.

There are others but I don?t have any experience with them but I?m sure they do the job as well. Just my thoughts on the online point of sales and one other thing, this is one of those things that?s going to really change the efficiency of retailers. I mean, imagine if your book-keeping costs are cut down by $100 a week? What does that do for the retailer? Makes them more efficient.

Imagine if, instead of using an old point of sales machines, they can just use an iPad, sit in cafes where their entire point of sale is an iPad. From an efficiency point of view, that?s just awesome.
