Islamists attack Tunisia hotel bar: witnesses | Morocco World News

TUNIS, Sept 3, 2012 (AFP)

Islamist activists raided the last working bar?in the central Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid on Monday, smashing bottles and?chasing away customers, witnesses said.

Around 50 activists burst into the bar in the Hotel Horchani in the centre?of town, customers and staff told AFP.

Bearded men then raided the reception and the upstairs rooms of the hotel,?the last in Sidi Bouzid to serve alcohol, some of them shouting ?Allahu Akbar??(God is greatest) and ?Al-Saharab haram? (drinking is a sin).

A young man who tried to film the raid was beaten by members of the group?and taken to an unknown location, as angry hotel guests gathered at the scene.

The sale and consumption of alcohol is regulated but legal in Tunisia,?traditionally a popular destination for tourists, especially from France.

Sidi Bouzid, the birthplace of the uprising that toppled veteran strongman?Zine El Abidine Ben Ali last year, is a stronghold of the Salafist movement,?which has grown increasingly assertive in recent months.

The North African country has witnessed numerous violent incidents linked?to the hardliners, prompting opposition activists to accuse the Islamist-led?coalition government of not doing enough to rein them in.

Jay-Z mimics Rocky at Philly Made In America fest

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jay-Z's entrance said it all: He bounced up and down on top of the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, mimicking Rocky before he took the stage in front of nearly 50,000. His song "Made In America" played in the background.

Jay-Z, like Rocky Balboa, has a rags-to-riches American dream story, and the 42-year-old entertainer ? who grew up in the Brooklyn projects and released his debut album in 1996 ? shared some of that through songs in his 90-minute set Saturday night at the Budweiser Made In America festival.

He entered from the back of the stage after running down the steps to perform "Public Service Announcement." That was followed with the night's first cameo: a prerecorded video with President Barack Obama.

Obama urged the crowd to vote this fall. He also said Jay-Z's story is "what Made In America means" and added that he enjoys listening to the rapper's music on his iPod.

Jay-Z headlined the first night of the two-day festival he curated, performing hits like "99 Problems," ''Dirt Off Your Shoulder," ''Big Pimpin'" and "Empire State of Mind."

The event is the first of its kind for the entrepreneurial Jay-Z, who is married to superstar Beyonce and owns a music management company, fashion line, nightclub and restaurant; he's also a co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets.

"Since you were so good to me, Philly, I'm going to be good to you tonight, Philly," Jay-Z yelled.

Rappers Pusta T and Big Sean hit the stage, and Kanye West followed, receiving an electrifying roar from the crowd. They performed a medley of hits, such as "Mercy," ''Dance" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

Jay-Z also brought out his former prot?g?s and Philadelphians Freeway, Chris and Neff, as well as Memphis Bleek. Common, 2 Chainz and Swizz Beatz also made appearances.

The scene was colorful and energetic, as thousands of music fans shifted from the three stages on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to watch Skrillex, D'Angelo, Passion Pit, Janelle Monae, Calvin Harris and 10 other acts. Sunday's line-up includes Pearl Jam, Run DMC, Odd Future and Drake, who was in the crowd Saturday night.

The festival is being filmed as a documentary and will be directed by Ron Howard. Proceeds from the ticketed event will benefit United Way chapters.

Jay-Z closed the night with West, performing the smash hit "...In Paris." Then fireworks blasted.

5 Ways to Torpedo Your Retirement ? Financial Freedom - Harris ...

Good Day,

It?s simply a miracle how some of us get to live a full retirement life with all the mistakes some us put ourselves through. A survey that was done recently found out that only a few retirees die while broke, this is good news. But I hope this will not mean that you stop paying attention to your retirement, because the laws governing retirement benefits keeps on changing every now and then, and with Social Security needing a serious review, now is the time to be extra vigilant when it comes to your retirement. There are a number of ways one can jeopardize their retirement, by the actions they either, knowingly or unknowingly, perform over the years. And as the years go by, and with the government transferring retirement contribution more and more to the individual, it is time everyone took responsibility for their own retirement, ensuring that you have what it takes to have a successful retirement. As Neal Frankle explains in the following article, there are five ways a person can affect the value of the retirement.

Couples who work hard all their lives often eagerly look forward to retirement. But working for 30 or more years doesn?t guarantee that you will be able to retire comfortably. Here are five common retirement planning errors that generally torpedo your ability to retire.

1. Too much debt.

Having debt is not the kiss of death for your retirement. But high interest debt such as credit card debt could be, especially if you can?t figure out how to get out of debt and begin saving for the future. It?s extremely difficult to invest for retirement when you are still paying off past purchases.

2. Spend your retirement savings on college.

Some couples make it a financial priority to pay for their children?s college so that they will not begin their careers with debt. However, when you tap your home equity, stop saving for retirement, or even raid your retirement accounts to pay for your children?s college, you may be sacrificing your own retirement security. On top of that, you will be missing a golden opportunity to teach your kids about money. There are a variety of ways to finance college, but you can?t take out loans for retirement.

3. No emergency plan.

Most of us are completely dependent on the money we receive from a single job. Losing that job can easily exhaust your savings and jeopardize your entire financial plan. It?s important to develop an emergency fund and plan before you hit those stormy waters. Consider taking on a second job or developing a side business to diversify your income streams in case a layoff should occur.

4. No long-term investment strategy.

Some people change their investment allocation based on the latest financial news. This can be a huge mistake. If you pulled money out of equities when the market tumbled in 2008, you also didn?t take advantage of the market recovery that has since occurred. Retirement savers need to accept that there will be fluctuations in mutual fund performance and invest for the long term. The only way to combat this type of emotional investing is to have a well thought out investment plan for retirement income that balances financial needs with emotional demands. Then you need to stick with that investment plan throughout financial storms.

5. No retirement plan.

The most dangerous mistake individuals can make is having no retirement plan. Financial plans are not set in stone and you won?t be able to foresee every contingency. But having an approximate roadmap you can follow is better than having no plan.

You can be smart, responsible, and hard-working and still end up without enough resources for a secure retirement. In order to make sure this doesn?t happen to you, take the time to put together a plan, track your spending, and don?t get into debt if you can help it. Think through your investment strategy and stick to it even when you feel tempted to change it.

3 family members fatally stabbed near Nashville - KWQC-TV6 News ...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities said Sunday that a man suspected of fatally stabbing a woman, her teen-aged son and her mother in their Nashville suburban home lived nearby.

Police spokesman Don Aaron told The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/N7hJkE) that the bodies of 48-year-old Michelle Pinkowski; her son, 14-year-old Jonathan Culpepper, and her mother, Marylea Jordan, were discovered around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Bellevue home.

Police said the boy's 9-year-old sister witnessed at least one of the killings before running out of the house and getting a neighbor to call authorities.

When officers arrived at the home, Aaron said, a bloodied Craig Garber answered the door and told officers to "just kill me".

Police said the 41-year-old Garber, who had self-inflicted stab wounds, was in stable condition Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is a suspect in the three deaths. Aaron said Garber lives a few doors down from the family and is known to have "emotional issues."

Investigators described the scene inside the home as gruesome.

"The scene is very bloody," Aaron said. "It's not something that you see in Nashville."

Aaron said Garber and Pinkowski were seen together on his porch around 11 p.m. Saturday. He said the two may have gone to Pinkowski's home, to her finished basement, which is where her body was eventually found.

Police believe Garber then went upstairs and killed the boy in his bedroom and then Jordan. Aaron said the young daughter, who was sleeping on the couch, saw her grandmother get stabbed and fled out a back door to seek help from a neighbor, who called 911.

According to police, the neighbor got a gun and rushed to the girl's home, where he saw Garber walking around inside.

"The way she was screaming and crying saying he's killing her, he's killing her!' I just ran," the neighbor, Jason Zimmerman, told WKRN-TV.

The neighbor said he backed away from the home when he heard sirens.

Aaron said police are trying to get warrants to search the homes of both the victims and the suspect. He said police are also trying to determine the exact nature of the relationship - if any - the man has with his neighbors and what the motive could be.

Aaron pretty much ruled out any other suspects.

"We firmly believe the man responsible for this is known, is in custody and is in Vanderbilt," he said.

Cardinal says Catholic Church '200 years out of date'

ROME (Reuters) - The former archbishop of Milan and papal candidate Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini said the Catholic Church was "200 years out of date" in his final interview before his death, published on Saturday.

Martini, once favoured by Vatican progressives to succeed Pope John Paul II and a prominent voice in the church until his death at the age of 85 on Friday, gave a scathing portrayal of a pompous and bureaucratic church failing to move with the times.

"Our culture has aged, our churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous," Martini said in the interview published in Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

"The Church must admit its mistakes and begin a radical change, starting from the pope and the bishops. The paedophilia scandals oblige us to take a journey of transformation," he said in the interview.

In the last decade the Church has been accused of failing to fully address a series of child abuse scandals which have undermined its status as a moral arbiter, though it has paid many millions in compensation settlements worldwide.

Martini, famous for comments that the use of condoms could be acceptable in some cases, told interviewers the Church should open up to new kinds of families or risk losing its flock.

"A woman is abandoned by her husband and finds a new companion to look after her and her children. A second love succeeds. If this family is discriminated against, not just the mother will be cut off but also her children."

In this way "the Church loses the future generation", Martini said in the interview, made a fortnight before he died. The Vatican opposes divorce and forbids contraception in favour of fidelity within marriage and abstinence without.

A liberal voice in the church, Martini's chances of becoming pope were damaged when he revealed he was suffering from a rare form of Parkinson's disease and he retired in 2002.

Pope John Paul II was instead succeeded in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI, a hero of Catholic conservatives who is known by such critical epithets as "God's rottweiler" because of his stern stand on theological issues.

Martini's final message to Pope Benedict was to begin a shake up of the Catholic church without delay.

"The church is 200 years out of date. Why don't we rouse ourselves? Are we afraid?"

Martini was much loved and thousands paid their respects at his coffin in Milan cathedral on Saturday.
