Deep-Sea Squid Ditches Wriggling Arms to Escape Predators

Much like lizards that ditch their tails in a tussle, some deep-sea squid can sacrifice their glowing arms to distract enemies and swim to safety. Scientists observed this defense mechanism first-hand in the foot-long octopus squid (Octopoteuthis deletron) off the coast of California.

"If a predator is trying to attack them, they may dig the hooks on their arms into the predator's skin," said University of Rhode Island researcher Stephanie Bush. "Then the squid jets away and leaves its arm tips stuck to the predator. The wriggling, bioluminescing arms might give the predator pause enough to allow the squid to get away."

Setting out to answer why many octopus squid have arms of different lengths, Bush and her team deployed a camera-equipped remotely controlled vehicle in the undersea Monterey Canyon and prodded a squid with a bottlebrush.

"The very first time we tried it, the squid spread its arms wide and it was lighting up like fireworks," Bush said in a statement from the University of Rhode Island. "It then came forward and grabbed the bottlebrush and jetted backwards, leaving two arms on the bottlebrush. We think the hooks on its arms latched onto the bristles of the brush, and that was enough for the arms to just pop off."

Though the squid eventually re-grow their severed arms, the strategy might seem extreme. Bush notes that there is "definitely an energy cost associated with this behavior, but the cost is less than being dead." [See Cool Photos of Squid]

During later experiments, Bush found that some of these deep-sea squid seemed hesitant to let go of their limbs, while some did so after being poked several times, according to the statement. She also tested seven other squid species for the defense strategy and found that none of them jettisoned their arms.

The results of Bush's experiments were published in the July 2012 issue of the journal Marine Ecology Progress Series.

Past research on the octopus squid found they have another ingenious ability: In the deep, dark waters where the squid live, meeting a mate is tough, and when they do come across their own species, the deep-sea gloom means it's tough to tell a gal from a guy. The octopus squid's workaround? They simply mate with any octopus squid that crosses their path.

Hearing Problems? Visit a Hearing Center for Help with Options ...

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Andrea Avery | Wednesday, 01 August 2012 07:31 | Word Count: 487

Hearing problems can affect people of any age. If you find that you are no longer able to listen to sounds around you as clearly as you used to or if you are struggling to understand what people around you are saying to you then it may be time to visit a hearing center in your community. Do not feel embarrassed or scared because this can happen to both males and females. Young or old you can still end up with auditory loss.

Many people think that there is no need to visit a hearing center when they are young because problems only happen to those who are older. True or false? False! Hearing loss is not necessarily an age-specific condition. It is not uncommon for people to think that they do not need to have their hearing checked until they are past 60. But there are plenty of people who experience loss of hearing in one or both ears before they are 60 or 65 years old.

Help for these problems can be found by talking with someone at a local hearing center. It is a relief to know that help is not that far away!

While hearing loss that is age-related does occur, long-term exposure to noise can also lead to a difficulty with hearing. Even one very loud noise, such as that from a blast can lead to hearing loss that may or may not be permanent. Members of the military for instance who are exposed to such loud noises as explosions or gunfire may suffer from a sudden loss of hearing in one or both ears. There are plenty of other occupations as well where problems associated with noise exposure can occur. For example, truck drivers run the risk of developing hearing conditions.

A loss of hearing can also be brought on by health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes. Something many people do not realize is that chemotherapy treatments are not easy on the ears and can potentially cause problems. There are also some types of medications that are ototoxic in nature, which means that they can bring about damage to your internal hearing center. It is sometimes necessary for a person to take medication for a health condition that they suffer from but the potential side effect of doing this is that it can wreak havoc with the ears.

Auditory problems can also have a hereditary link. Any type of hearing condition can be linked to a certain extent back to a genetic association. It is worth noting however that age-related problems are also relatively common.

What you can do about auditory issues is to make your way to a center and find out what your options are. Technology for hearing aids has advanced a great deal and today there are numerous digital and programmable auditory aids to choose from. These aids are being enhanced and improved upon all of the time.

Amazon adds 'scan and match' feature to Cloud Player

16 hrs.

On Tuesday, the folks at Amazon announced a feature that's been added to Cloud Player: Scan and match.

This new feature enables something very similar to Apple's iTunes Match on Amazon's?cloud-based music streaming?service.?You allow Amazon to scan your iTunes or Windows Media Player libraries in order to match songs you own to those in Amazon's catalog. All of the matched songs ??whether they were purchased from iTunes, ripped from CDs, or otherwise acquired ??become instantly available in Cloud Player.

As with iTunes Match, the songs that you'll find in Cloud Player will be 256 Kbps, no matter how low-quality your own versions were (though Amazon hasn't yet confirmed which file format it's using to deliver the streamed audio).?You can access Cloud Player?? and stream?these matched songs?? from a Kindle Fire, Android device, iPhone, iPod Touch or any Web browser.?In a side bit of good news, both Sonos and Roku players will soon get Amazon Cloud Player access, too.

Since the scan and match feature is simply an addition to Cloud Player, it won't cost you anything?? assuming you have a small music library. You see, there's a free version of Cloud Player that lets you store all of the MP3s you've ever purchased on Amazon, along with up to 250 songs imported (or matched)?from your own collection. If you need to store more of your own tunes than that, then you'll have to shell out $25 per year, which will grant you the ability to import up to 250,000 songs.

It's worth noting that you are able to download your songs anywhere, without DRM, in the format they were originally imported.

I'm going to give Cloud Player's new scan and match feature a try.?Here's hoping that Amazon got things right.

Wikipad specs get real: 10.1-inch 1,280 x 800 display, 1.4 GHz Tegra 3, Jelly Bean

Wikipad-specs-get-real

The Wikipad gaming tablet has been ticking off boxes on its way to becoming a real product, and after bedding down with Gaikai game streaming and settling in to a 10.1-inch form factor, the rest of the hardware is now set. The chunky handheld will brandish an IPS display with 1,280 x 800 resolution, NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, at least 16GB storage and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Other notable items include 8-megapixel rear / 2-megapixel front cameras, six hours continuous gaming battery life and a 2D-only screen instead of the 3D originally touted -- at least, for the first model. The controller remains the same with a pair of triggers, bumpers, joysticks and start/select buttons, and will cover the slate's speakers and route sound out the front. The rest of the story is yet to come, namely exactly what that price will be and when you'll actually be able to pew-pew with it, but the company has promised to 'fess up soon. Meanwhile, though airy for a tablet at 560 grams (1.2 pounds), it's not exactly PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS XL territory -- but then a heavyweight contender could be exactly what handheld gaming needs.
